‘V/H/S’ brings on scares new and old

Kate Lyn Sheil stars in “Second Honeymoon,” a film within "V/H/S."

Although some aspects of “V/H/S” were reminiscent of recent horror flicks like “Paranormal Activity” and “The Devil Inside,” with the shaky, hand-held camera work and the far-fetched effects, “V/H/S” also gives horror movie fans something relatively new to sink their teeth into. The film centers around a group of criminals who are hired to procure a VHS tape, yet they must watch footage of gruesome murders in order to find the right one.

The film starts off strong with the first segment, directed by David Bruckner: This tape is the most intense of the five and gives viewers the best scares. “V/H/S” is filled with unexpected twists, however it’s definitely not for those with a weak stomach. The multiple storylines certainly keep you engrossed in the film, however it does begin to lose luster by the end. The segments get weaker as the film goes on. They become more over-the-top, filled with tricks we’ve already seen before.

The third segment, directed by Glenn McQuaid is the worst of all. The storyline, which follows a group of teens who head into the woods to party, brings back too many awful “Blair Witch” memories.
