VIDEO: Boston band Parks ‘Learn to Fight’ boring music

Parks at Great Scott, Jan. 8

The five-piece led by Brian E. King sprouted up this past fall out of the ashes of local alt rock outfit Oranjuly. “Certain things didn’t fit with my old band. [Parks] is really honest — [there are] a lot of newer songs and we’re able to be less derivative with a lot of influences,” says lead singer King.

Their first single, “Sweater Weather,” a jangly number ripe with Beach Boys-esque harmonies and straight riffs, bodes well. As does their third show earlier this month, opening for nationally acclaimed indie pop act Hospitality at Great Scott. It was a packed one, characterized by simple hooks, occasional three-part harmonies and upbeat 90s alt rock.

And, it was a breath of fresh air in the alt rock circles of the Boston music community, which are typically punk and indie focused. “In Boston, there’s always an undercurrent of every genre… it’s [typically] not super pop and people are driven to do their influences,” muses King.

Parks, who hope to evoke ‘chillin’ in a park in the summer,’ have a pretty simple goal. “We create songs with hooks and harmonic sections,” says bassist/vocalist Matt Girard.

Stay tuned for their debut full-length, which is currently being mixed by Boston-based Grammy-award winning engineer Ducky Carlisle.

In the meantime, “Locally Amped” is proud to premiere two videos from their mini-session at Cambridge Antiques Market taped earlier this month. Listen below to “Learn to Fight,” a Parks original, as well as a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Little Lies.”

Parks play the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge with The Explorers Club on February 9.
