Who is the man behind the Lena Dunham couch and Hidden Valley Ranch ads?

On Tuesday, a Gowanus man posted an ad on Craigslist to sell his “very real and relatable couch.” He Photoshopped in a picture of “Girls” star Lena Dunham and compared his couch to the actress: “It’s a real couch being a real couch and we don’t see much of that in living rooms. Finally, a couch that is just like a couch you know or grew up with but it’s new and it’s okay for this couch to be pretty and sexual and everyone doesn’t have to freak out about it. I think that couches get stuck in a vortex of comfort vs. sexuality and it’s all just…life.”

The ad got picked up by websites like Defamer and People.com, and Dunham herself even retweeted the listing. The man behind the ad, Mickey Dwyer, tweeted on Wednesday that he sold the couch: “I was able to sell it to someone who had not seen all the Internet hoopla.”

The same man posted a hilarious fake ad of a Hidden Valley Ranch Scented Candle on YouTube on Tuesday: The video has since picked up more than 42,000 views after a Reddit user posted it on the site. The fake ad boasts high production value, complete with a journey past mozzarella sticks, pizza and onions, set to a fake Kings of Leon song (“Yeah — This Ranch Is on Fire”). The voiceover actress announces: “All the great aromas of your favorite salad dressing, now in a scented candle for your home. Because here in the Valley, it’s about family.” The delightful spec makes zero sense, and it’s not the first Hidden Valley Ranch ad Dwyer has posted. He also posted a commercial for Hidden Valley Ranch Dissolving Oral Strips.

But who is this viral genius who had two hits in two days? Dwyer did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but from what we can gather, he is a Brooklyn-based animator who made short films like “Pool Cat” and “Pug Fight,” according to his IMDB page. He also posts videos in a comedy series called “How to Draw” on YouTube.

Dwyer has an unusual obsession with Hidden Valley Ranch. He trolls the company and tweets at them with fake ads like this one, that features a Hidden Valley Ranch flavor of Emergen-C.

If Dwyer’s videos feel familiar to you, it may be because they have a “Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job!” kind of vibe. The similarities between Dwyer’s work and the wacky Adult Swim show don’t seem to be a coincidence. Dwyer tweeted his Hidden Valley Ranch Scented Candle commercial to both Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim earlier on Wednesday, asking them to spread the word.

We just hope the silence from Hidden Valley doesn’t stop Dwyer from producing more commercials.
