Top five Winter Olympic wipeouts

Who doesn’t love watching the Winter Olympics: the elegant ice skaters, the controlled speed skaters, the clean landing after a snowboard flip?

But where there is grace, there is also imperfection. We can’t help rewatching Olympic wipeouts, and here are Metro’s top five.

5. We kick off our countdown with Erben Wennemars, the speed skater from Holland who took a hard fall in the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics. We are reminded of a smashed pumpkin after he crashed into the boards during the men’s 500m speed skating final.

4. In the Winter Olympics, there’s more than one way to fail. Check out this 2012 Winter Olympics blooper as Gillian Cooke, a member of the female U.K. bobsled team, leans into a wardrobe malfunction seconds before competing.

3. Switzerland’s Evelyne Leu takes our third place after her big crash during the women’s Ariels final in the  2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics.

2. With a last name like “Ohno,” it should be no surprise that something is bound to go wrong for this American speed skater. In the 2002 Games, Apolo Ohno took down three other Olympian skaters during his fall in the men’s 1,000-meter short-track final.

1. Landing in first place on our list is Austria’s Herman Maier, with his infamous wipeout in the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Maier suffered no serious injuries after taking a remarkable tumble and went on the win two gold metals a few days later.
