Art Everywhere US is replacing ads with art
This morning, Art Everywhere US unveiled in Times Square the first painting to be featured in the largest outdoor art exhibition ever conceived. In total, 58 works of American art will be projected onto 50,000 out-of-home displays nationwide, replacing the advertising that would normally be on display. Notable New York City spaces include digital billboards, subway platforms and bus shelters.
The exhibition is organized by the Outdoor Advertising Association of America in conjunction with five major art museums: the Art Institute of Chicago; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
Artwork spans the Declaration of Independence to contemporary works, all contributed from the five participating museums. Notable American marvels include Whistler’s “Symphony in White” (1862), Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” (1930) and Andy Warhol’s “Campbell’s Soup Can” (1964). A contest earlier this year allowed the American public to narrow down an original list of 100 to the 58 pieces of artwork on display in the exhibition this month.
