Rielle Hunter and John Edwards call it quits as memoir hits shelves

Rielle Hunter said she's not sure what the future holds for her relationship with John Edwards.

Politics’ most controversial couple has split up just as a memoir with details about their affair has hit book stores.

Rielle Hunter appeared on “Good Morning America” Tuesday and confirmed that she and John Edwards, the father of her 4-year-old daughter Quinn, broke up last week, just days before her tell-all memoir hit the shelves.

“We are a family, but as of the end of last week, John Edwards and I are no longer a couple,” Hunter said. “We decided together to end it.”

She did not give many details about the cause of the breakup, but did mention “media scrutiny” surrounding the couple leading up to the release of her memoir and during Edwards’ recent trail for illegal campaign contribution charges.

“It’s hard, and it wears you down after a while,” Hunter said.

Her book, “What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me,” includes intimate details about the affair she carried on with Edwards even as his wife, Elizabeth Edwards, was dying of cancer, as ABC reports.

The memoir also includes discussions she had with Edwards as he was set to face trial for charges that used political donations to cover up his affair with the then-pregnant Hunter during his failed presidential campaign in 2008.

Last month, the judge declared a mistrial and Edwards will likely not be re-tried.

Buzzfeed compiled a supercut of the highlights from Hunter’s appearance on “The View” Tuesday afternoon:
