Weekend reading: Civil War love story ‘I Shall Be Near To You’
Out just in time for Black History Month, “I Shall Be Near to You” is a moving love story set during the Civil War. When Rosetta’s husband Jeremiah enlists to fight in the Union army, the thought of being away from him is too much for her to bear. To stay together, she disguises herself as a boy and enlists, ready to fight right alongside him.
Author Erin Lindsay McCabe based the love story on more than 250 surviving documents of women who fought during the Civil War, passing themselves off as men with short haircuts and baggy uniforms. Often forgotten by history, between 400 and 1,000 women fought in the Civil War for both the Union and Confederate sides.
As Union soldiers, Rosetta and Jeremiah’s love story is also a reminder of what so many sacrificed to unite the country.
