Some of the best food in NYC isn’t found in restaurants. We had Tom Vandenberghe, author of the upcoming “New York Street Food,” give us the best of the best in terms of street eats. He would know, right?

Morocho

Peruvian food in Union Square

Order this: Veal heart stick

Vandenberghe calls the food here “beyond your average lunch.” “Organ meat isn’t that popular in the New York street food scene. But here it’s fried to perfection, juicy and crunchy. It’s served with a nicely made black mint sauce, a kick for any street foodie.”

Veronica’s

Jamaican food in the Financial District

Order this: Oxtail stew

Here’s “another almost forgotten and very economical part of beef,” Vandenberghe says, calling Veronica’s “tasty and soft.” “You can tell this has been on the stove for several hours. It’s like coming home to grandma’s table.”

Tortas Neza

Mexican food in Jackson Heights, Queens

Order this: Salted beef tacos

“This guy is passionate about soccer and tortas,” the author says. “The Mexican sandwiches he serves are named after Mexican soccer teams. They come in huge piles. If you want try something more digestable, go for the salted beef tacos.”

Marina Vera Luz

Mexican food in the Meatpacking district

Order this: Pozole
It’s “food with a history” at this truck, Vandenberghe says of the Aztec-style food “made with so much gusto.” The author says he can “still can taste the slow cooked pork, the home made chili sauce and the twist of lime.”

The Cinnamon Snail

Vegetarian food on Park Avenue

Order this: Tempeh sandwich

“This is how funky vegan food [should] be,” the author says of the “innovative, fresh, well managed place.” One word of advice: “Check in early to beat the queue.”
