Cold weather didn’t stop Gabby Douglas’ fans from waiting in line for nearly an hour outside the Sony store in midtown Manhattan. The pint-sized powerhouse and Olympic Gold Medalist patiently took photos and signed autographs with her fans while promoting the new Sony VAIO Flip. The company chose Douglas because she is one of the world’s most famous flippers.

Douglas told Metro, “It’s really fun! You can play, work and display,” she grinned.

It’s been a busy past year for the 17-year-old gymnast, who became the first ever black individual all-around champion in gymnastics at the Olympics and the first American Olympic gymnast to win both the individual all-around and team competitions. She’s been traveling ever since, interviewing with Oprah and meeting the Obamas. But Douglas said her most exciting moment this past year was her appearance for McDonald’s in April when she flipped in Times Square. “Flipping in Times Square, flipping on the sidewalk in New York – that was so exciting,” said the bubbly teenager.

Douglas also said it’s been surreal meeting so many of her favorite celebrities. She said the most exciting celebrity she met was not President Barack Obama, but Katy Perry. “She’s really nice,” she gushed.

In spite of her megawatt smile, Douglas has struggled through difficult stages in her life, especially when she was training in Virginia. She told Oprah that she encountered racism at her gym, but she dodged the question when Metro pressed her for more details. “Well, I was really homesick at one point, so that’s why I wanted to quit,” she said. “But my foundation kept me going – my family my coaches, they helped me through it.”

Though Douglas has been busy making appearances and promoting products, she said she still has her eye on the gold for 2016. “Right now I’m back in training and everything is going very well,” she said.
