Specialty box office: No one much saw this weekend’s new releases

This weekend lacked a big breakout indie/art house hit, presumably because everyone was seeing two of the year’s biggest Oscar contenders: “Gravity” and “Captain Phillips.” Whatever the reason, specialty-driven audiences were thin on the ground.

According to Indiewire, the best per-screen average went to the documentary “God Loves Uganda,” which managed $7,300 from a single theater. Bubbling below that were another doc, “Broadway Idiot,” with $6,496, and James Franco’s adaptation of William Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying.” That took $6,001, which is good but not great. (Perhaps audiences will line up when Franco tackles another unfilmable Faulkner, “The Sound and the Fury,” which is actually happening.)

The big breakout was supposed to be “Escape From Tomorrow,” Randy Moore’s hyper-buzzed Sundance hit, notable for being shot without permission in Disney World and Disneyland. A surreal black-and-white portrait of a dad going nuts on family vacation, it grossed $66,112 from 20 screens for a meh average of $2,204. However, it did also open on VOD, and numbers from that have yet to be released.

In ongoing releases, the Spanish-language “Pulling Strings” continued to do well, as did “Instructions Not Included,” whose total gross now stands at $42.7 million. It is the highest grossing Spanish-language film at the U.S. box office. Meanwhile, “Enough Said,” with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini, in one of his final screen performances, took in another $1.9 million, bringing it total to $8.1 million.
