The 2014 Oscars: White ruled the red carpet

It’s a long-standing joke that the Oscars is the whitest night in Hollywood. And last night this was especially true, with alabaster being the biggest color trend of the evening.

First up: Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski, who wore coordinating white and gold outfits. Weir told New York Mag that, true to form, he had to be different in his fashion choices for the night. “If I showed up to the Oscars in a black tuxedo with a black tie, it wouldn’t be authentic, it wouldn’t be me, and I would feel like a penguin,” he said on his decision to wear this outfit, which he described as “tux-ish.” To complement her man, Olympic-winning figure skater Lipinski donned this white sleeveless Rani Zakhem gown with a little princess train.

Another matching couple, looking resplendent despite their neutral tones, were Matthew McConaughey and wife Camila Alves, both in Dolce & Gabbana: Alves in a light pink gown with McConaughey in a stylized tux by the designers.

We take back everything we said about Kate Hudson last week: Frankly, she stole the night in this shimmery silver Versace Atelier number — either with the mini-cape or without it. Sadly, the usual red carpet stunner, Cate Blanchett, reminded us a bit too much of Britney Spears circa “Toxic” in this nude Armani Prive cap-sleeve gown.

Meanwhile, we dug Portia de Rossi in this unique, honeycomb halter gown by Naeem Khan — but wouldn’t it have popped a bit more next to her blonde coloring in a bold color?

Jessica Biel was Justin Timberlake-less at last night’s Academy Awards but turned heads nonetheless in a form-fitting, shimmery nude Chanel Couture gown. “Access Hollywood” hostess Maria Menounos donned a white Johanna Johnson dress, which looked somewhat similar to Naomi Watts’ floor-length Calvin Klein. Although it’s hard to see the beaded pattern, Watts told Ryan Seacrest that, ”It’s sort of like a spider web.”
