[Live Take]: Butter the Children at Glasslands, 7/28

Brooklyn’s Butter the Children at Glasslands on July 28.

When a group of loud Brooklyn DIY shoegazers signed to Downtown Records this spring — who also work with Cold War Kids, Miike Snow, Santigold and Cyndi Lauper — I was slightly surprised to say the least.

On Sunday night, though, they quickly brought their noise — and attention — into a fairly empty room on a rainy night. Taking a page from girl-fronted punk acts like Screaming Females and the ’90s prototype Sleater-Kinney, lead singer Inna Mkrtycheva centers the four-piece with surprising ferocity.

As quickly as that intensity begins, though, the song ends (most clock in at under three minutes). They played mostly songs off their self-titled, DIY debut release last year and recreated the all encompassing soundscape while letting the music speak for itself. (One of the few things that they said on stage was “Here’s our new single, ‘Spit It Out.’”)

That’s not to say that they aren’t confident. It’s no wonder that they know how to put on a show, as the band is made of former members from other Brooklyn DIY acts. They’ve been playing consistently since they came together in this outfit last spring.

It’ll be interesting to see how a band very much entrenched in a local DIY scene broadens with a label like Downtown. If their first single off the new True Crime EP (out 8/20) is any hint, it probably can’t hurt ‘em. Listen to “Spit It Out’ below (via Stereogum).
