Chili Peppers parody makes Super Bowl magic with ‘Abracadbralifornia’

Some would argue that the Red Hot Chili Peppers have become a parody of themselves since their 1990s heyday, but what there is no arguing about is that whoever registered the domain www.rhcp2014.com and posted the song “Abracadabralifornia” on that website has certainly made a brilliant parody of the band’s trademark L.A. funk.

The song begins like one of their slower jams, as the lyrics detail a driving experience in their home city, a la the “Saturday Night Live” sketch, “The Californians.”

“Burning down the 405/and I barely feel alive/taking the exit for the 10/she told me I was her friend,” sings the mysterious singer who pretty much nails the Anthony Kiedis woeful impersonation.

Then the singer proceeds to nail the rappin’ side of Kiedis.

Among the best lines that he spits:

I’ll drink an Alabama Slammer with your sexyass Grandma
The Hulk turns green when the rays get gamma

Then the lyrics get absurdly graphic, which is actually perfectly in keeping with the direction a Chilis song could go in. Towards the end, the singer compares local Target stores, and why one ranks superior over another: “Shopping carts! Escalators!”

The site is filled with all sorts of logos to make it seem credible. As the Chilis are playing the half-time show at the Super Bowl with Bruno Mars, there are logos for both musicians, Pepsi, Dodge Durango, Pepsi and the Super Bowl itself. Needless to say, many people on the web believed it was real.

In this day and age of viral information though, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if the band is right now learning how to play this song for their half-time ritual.

UPDATE: Salon is reporting that the comedians behind this parody are none other than Jon Daly and Zach Galifianakis, who first took a stab at imitating Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith and whoever else is playing with them these days on an episode of the “Comedy Bang Bang” podcast. The song happens at about the 25-minute mark.
