Jesse Woods lifts you up into Texas

Jesse Woods makes the prettiest tunes, plump with nostalgia. His lyrics ring poignant and optimistic. Words and melody express a sexy longing and show a flare for storytelling.

This week he played back-to-back NYC shows supporting his album released in late summer, “Get Your Burdens Lifted.” It was a first foray out of Texas for songs that sound not unlike 1960s California.

“Sparks” is a favorite off his “Moon Rocks” EP (2010). An evocative love song with a chorus about taking his girl’s hand to the moon, Woods’ lyric “southern gentleman steal your hand” pretty much sums it up. The former wide receiver for Texas A&M is an easy Valentine’s choice with lush guitar melodies and echo-laden vocals yearning for a far away love.

Other tracks on the EP tell stories under titles like “Sunken Sailboat” or “Broken Cowboy,” but for the anti-Valentine, “PJ” is the perfect three minutes of hopeful melancholy that uplifts. Riding between folk and country, Woods saddles a dream and makes chase through NYC.

Catch his crooning Feb. 7 at Baby’s All Right, 146 Broadway, Brooklyn.
