Whether you love them or hate them — or if you say that you hate them and secretly sing along to their songs alone in your car — there’s no denying the global phenomenon of One Direction.

Four years ago today, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik, met when they auditioned together on “The X Factor” in the UK. While they did not advance individually in the “boys” category, they were placed together and ultimately advanced to the group category.

The phenomenon was born.

To celebrate the momentous holiday, Directioners  took to Twitter to reminisce.

Some even pointed out how the world’s favorite boy band almost didn’t come to be.

Some fans announced how they were with the band from the very beginning. From their colorful choices of clothing, to their darker and tattooed look, @CRAICSTYLES is not going anywhere.

However, not everyone is a fan.

Clothing and accessory retailer Rowdy Gentleman made it very clear what happens when There is a One Direction hashtag on Twitter. With trends such as #4YearsAgo5StrangersBecame5Brothers, #ThankYou1DFor and #1DMemories, it makes you wonder how this company will stay in business.

Others pointed out moments that only true Directioners would know about. Does anyone remember when Liam Payne made a whale smile? @1DBeMineForeva sure did.

But who can forget this moment between Harry Styles and his mother? Everyone loves a good old-fashioned mama’s boy.
