Award winning movie star and Cambridge native Ben Affleck has signed on to direct a new television crime drama that will be set in Boston.

Fox Broadcasting Company has ordered a pilot of “The Middle Man,” and Affleck will serve not only as director but as an executive producer as well.

The gritty 1960s-era show will focus on the life of fictional FBI agent Rudy MacAteer and his attempts to take down the Italian-American mafia with the help of a confidential informant, an Irish-American gangster named Mickey Flood.

According to creators, “as Rudy finds himself forced to bend the laws he pledged to enforce, the duo’s actions inadvertently give rise to the Irish-American mob in this timeless Boston crime saga.”

The project dates back to 2009, when the show’s co-executive producer, Chay Carter, and Affleck met actor and screenwriter Michael Yebba and screenwriter Emilio Mauro in 2010 during production of “The Town,” which Affleck directed, co-wrote and starred in. That film was set in Charlestown.

The script for “The Middle Man” is based on a story developed by Yebba, Mauro and the show’s third executive producer, Glenn Gordon Caron.

Casting is expected to begin immediately, and the show will likely begin production in 2014. A pilot is expected to air on Fox sometime in the 2014-2015 television season.

Affleck is a two-time Academy Award winner who has been recognized for his work as a director, actor, writer and producer. In addition to “The Town,” he has had success with Boston-set films like “Good Will Hunting” and “Gone Baby Gone.”

The 41-year-old star is also slated to play Batman in the upcoming Superman-Batman movie.
