The best part of writing GQ advertorials is the free snacks.

We open this episode of “Girls” at Cafe Grumpy and Hannah’s calling out for a customer. Maury? Maura? Mary? Oh, no, that coffee is for Alexandra. Hannah is giving Ray her notice because she’s quitting, and when he asks what bulls– job she’s taking this time, she does her classic Hannah “so” shrug with her hands in the air after she tells him it’s “really not a bulls– job, so.” Shosh peeks into the window, sunglasses on, and walks away, and Hannah tells Ray she’s working at GQ. Ray gives her a hard time and asks her who the sponsor is because he knows she can’t get a staff job in editorial. She’s working on sponsored content for Neiman Marcus.

Shoshanna passes by the basketball court while Ray plays a pickup game. He nods and she walks away. Meanwhile, Hannah shows up for her first day at GQ where someone has kindly scrawled “H. Horvatt” on a piece of notebook paper taped to her cubicle.

Ray gives Marnie a call to “check in” after sleeping with her and she rebuffs him. She tells him she’s watching TV and he asks her what show and she says she knows he doesn’t care. He calls her again and says he does care; Marnie tests him and tells him to prove he cares.

At Hannah’s new job, she finds out that GQ editorial staffers hate when the sponsored writers refer to themselves as GQ writers. She looks disappointed but then she discovers the snack room, where gourmet sodas and juices, Sun Chips, Clif bars and lox are all free. She can’t even handle herself and she grabs a mountain of snacks for her first meeting.

Jessa is doing well at her new job and convinces mothers to buy dresses that are too small for their babies by implying they’re morbidly obese if they can’t fit into them. Shoshanna shows Jessa a positive review of Ray’s cafe in a magazine and decides she needs to get her life in order and find a boyfriend.

Hannah’s boss Janice, played by J. Crew’s Jenna Lyons, asks the four writers for pitches and Hannah sweeps with several well-received ideas. Hannah is happy to do so well and celebrates by bringing her free snacks home to Adam. He doesn’t like the free stuff because it’s full of “s– and pigeon bones.”

Ray shows up at Marnie’s door and the two of them watch “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” together, which of course ends in the two of them having sex.

Hannah heckles one of her coworkers and asks him why he doesn’t like her. “I don’t like your face,” he tells her. “It annoys me – your mouth makes me want to rip it off your face.” He tells her the only way he’ll like her is if she gets a new face. The writers gather in the snack room and talk about their careers. Hannah implies she’s better than everyone else: “I’m like no offense, a writer-writer.” Then she finds out that the three of them have been published in n+1, the New Yorker and Kevin, who doesn’t like Hannah’s face, won a prestigious award for his poetry. They admit they haven’t had much time to write in their free time and Hannah is devastated that writers like them need to write advertorials to pay the bills.

Later, she talks to Janice and tries to quit. She says she doesn’t want to be there in 10 years. Janice doesn’t bat an eyelash before saying, “There’s a lot of people who would love to have your job.” Hannah pauses and decides she’ll stay. She goes back to her cubicle and cries and her coworker calls her to say everyone can hear her.

Ray and Marnie get lunch in Chinatown and have a massive row about Africa. Marnie is about to walk out but Ray apologizes and convinces her to stay.

Meanwhile, Shoshanna gets back together with a dumb ex and lays down the rules of the relationship, while they’re having sex.

Adam tells Hannah that he nailed an audition but as he starts to tell her what happened, Hannah falls asleep on the couch, exhausted by her ordeal at work.
