The Word: Watch Ben Affleck work on his marriage on live TV

Jennifer Garner (in Gucci) supported hubby Ben Affleck on the red carpet.
Speculation has been high that Jennifer Garner and hubby Ben Affleck are on the rocks.

Ben Affleck hosted “Saturday Night Live” last weekend, and took his opening monologue as a chance to atone for past live TV sins. When Ben won an Oscar this year for Best Director, he very properly thanked his wife Jennifer Garner — but then babbled on for awhile about how his marriage was “work.”

On Saturday night, he finally set the record straight — tongue in cheek, of course — by bringing Jennifer up to share the SNL stage. She explained that “work” is how they privately speak of their marriage.

However, the actress joked that “work” was not the word she would have preferred that he use on live TV. “I would have said ‘My wife is a gift,’” she said.

The SNL audience was quiet through most of the segment — maybe because Ben looked so genuinely sweaty and terrified that they were worried Jen was actually coming onstage to dump him.

Saturday also marked the final performance from longtime cast member Bill Hader, who is leaving “Saturday Night Live” after eight years on the show.

Hader has become such a versatile player that it’s hard to imagine “SNL” without him — and it sounds like he’s having a little trouble with it himself. “It was a hard decision, but it has to happen at some point,” Hader told the Times. “It got to a point where I said, ‘Maybe it’s just time to go.’”
