The Word: Zach Braff taught Woody Allen about Kickstarter

Get ready for the Kickstarter campaign for “Manhattan II: Brooklyn.” Woody Allen now officially knows how crowdfunding works, and it’s all thanks to “Garden State” star and Kickstarter aficionado Zach Braff.

Apparently, the day actor/director Braff’s $2 million Kickstarter campaign for his film “Wish I Was Here” got funded, he happened to be meeting with Allen. “Everyone else in the room was like, ‘Oh my God! Congratulations! That’s insane! I can’t believe it worked! No one thought it would work,’” Braff said on Sirius XM radio. “And he clearly didn’t know what anyone was talking about, so I started explaining it to him.”

Braff said the legendary director was fascinated, and asked questions for 10 minutes. Allen’s assistant later emailed Braff and said that Allen “won’t stop talking” about crowdfunding. Braff adds that Allen’s films have moved to Europe of late because that’s where he can find investors, and that a crowdfunding campaign could potentially bring him back to New York City.

I don’t know how to feel about this. On the one hand, it would be cool to get Woody Allen making movies in Manhattan again. On the other hand, I live in Manhattan, and Woody Allen never funds anything for me. Fund me a hamburger, Woody, and we’ll talk.

Rather than convincing studio executives to believe and invest in his project, Braff took to Kickstarter and asked fans to fund his next project, a sort of-sequel to “Garden State.”

“The story of Aidan Bloom (played by me), a struggling actor, father and husband, who at 35 is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life. He and his wife are barely getting by financially and Aidan passes his time by fantasizing about being a great futuristic space knight he’d always dreamed he’d be as a kid,” he writes on the page.
