The Word: Mumford and Sons skip Bonnaroo due to bassist’s brain surgery

After undergoing surgery earlier this week, Mumford and Sons bassist Ted Kwane is going to be fine, the band reported on their facebook page.

“It is with great joy that we can announce that Ted has been discharged from hospital and is on the road to a full recovery,” they wrote. “The surgery went well, and the excellent medical team helping him are very pleased with his progress. He has been nothing short of heroic in how he has handled the whole ordeal, and now it has been medically proved that he does indeed have a brain.”

If the band is relieved enough to make “Wizard of Oz” cracks at Kwane’s expense, it really does sound like he’s going to be OK. However, he’ll need time to recover, which means disappointing some fans, including those at summer music festival Bonnaroo. “We were hoping to have made it out by Bonnaroo this weekend. But it is with sadness that we have to announce the cancellation of our scheduled performances at both Bonnaroo and Telluride Festivals, and our show at Cricket Wireless Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, KS. If we could’ve we would’ve, you know that about us,” the band wrote.

I suppose I can let it slide just this once, guys. But the next time one of you needs brain surgery, suck it up. I need to hear some banjos.

British folk-rockers Mumford & Sons canceled three sold-out concerts in the United States this week after announcing on Tuesday that bassist Ted Dwane needed emergency surgery for a blood clot on the brain.

The band, which won Album of the Year for “Babel” at the Grammy awards in February and the British Group award at the BRIT awards, said Dwane had felt unwell for a few days and was taken to hospital on Monday for emergency treatment.

“The scans revealed a blood clot on the surface of his brain that requires an operation,” the band said in a statement on its website.

“Ted is receiving excellent care and we are being assured that he will recover quickly from surgery.”

Dwane plays bass, drums, guitar and sings with the four-member band that formed in 2007.
