The Word: Mel Gibson once screamed at child star until she cried

Before Mel Gibson was outed as an anti-semite who called people “sugar t**s,” he was considered a nice, family-friendly star. Turns out even back then, Mel Gibson was, you know, Mel Gibson.

Gaby Hoffmann appeared in Gibson’s 1993 directorial debut “The Man Without a Face” when she was 11 years old. Even then, she says, he was no walk in the park – and he didn’t let her off easy because she was a kid, either.

“He screamed at me. Oh God, he really screamed at me,” she told HuffPo Live. “He just started cursing and screaming at me.”

So did he ever make her cry? “Yeah. Oh yeah.”

Mel wasn’t the only problem, though – Gaby says she worked with a number of “difficult” male directors as a child, plus Nora Ephron, who was awesome. ”Nora [Ephron] stood out like a shining golden goddess that I love,” she recalled.

Last year the volatile “Passion of the Christ” director was accused of terrorizing Teddy Joey Hicks Gibson, who married Mel’s dad Hutton in 2001. She and Mel apparently disagreed on how to treat their ailing father, who has health issues, according to thehollywoodgossip.com. “Mel began yelling and saying, ‘f*ck this, f*ck that’ while levelling other extremely offensive language at me,” said Teddy. Mel added: “not to f*ck with [Hutton's] treatments in any way.”
