The Word: Loki out, Black Widow enters ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’

Sorry, Tumblr: Your oddly powerful obsession with “Avengers” villain Loki will probably go unsatisfied in the sequel, “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

Loki isn’t likely to play a large role in the upcoming sequel, “Avengers” writer/director Joss Whedon said at Comic Con this weekend. But of course, Marvel won’t write out such a popular character altogether. “Loki could be the Big Bad for us for a long time,” Marvel boss Kevin Feige told Slash Film.

Two characters you’ll be seeing more of, however, are Black Widow and Hawkeye — because, Whedon says, they don’t have movies of their own. “Natasha is a huge part of the sequel because you do want to concentrate on the people who don’t have their own franchises,” he said, according to Comic Book Movie.

That sounds remarkably fair. Joss Whedon would make an excellent preschool teacher.

“Age of Ultron” is the name of a recent storyline in the Avengers comics, but Whedon says we shouldn’t expect the film to follow the same story. “It works very simply: This is Marvel cinema, not Marvel comics,” Whedon told io9. “One thing (Marvel Studios head) Kevin Feige has a genius for is knowing what to hold onto and what to let go of. You can invoke the feeling you had and play with the characters you love and remain true to the needs of the film.”
