The Word: Weiner and Spitzer scandals great for ‘The Good Wife’

No one seems super pleased that Anthony Weiner and Eliot Spitzer are back in the political arena. Their wives seem bummed out (Silda Spitzer does, at least). The public is bummed out. The women Weiner has been sending lewd messages to seem bummed out. But there’s a bright side to everything: This is great news for the CBS drama “The Good Wife.”

“The Good Wife” is about a woman whose politician husband cheats on her, and star Juliana Margulies admits that these kind of scandals make the show more relevant.

“I would never want to benefit from someone else’s pain but I have been emailing [our producers] for two weeks now. It is the gift that just keeps on giving,” she told E! Online. “It is shocking that in our fifth season, this show is more relevant than ever.”

I’d say it’s not shocking at all, actually. That’s what makes “The Good Wife” so good and politicians so terrible.

In a heartfelt essay written last week, former congressman Anthony Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, defended staying with her husband despite his transgressions.

“So why am I doing this?” Abedin writes in an essay titled “The Good Wife” in Harper’s Bazaar. ”Because Anthony has always been a smart, caring and dedicated person, and while he’s the same public servant who wants what’s best for the people he represents, he is now something else — a better man.”
