The Word: Jack White’s custody battle turns nasty

White Stripes frontman Jack White had such an amicable split from singer Karen Elson that they threw a joint divorce party. But all that goodwill seems to have evaporated now that their custody battle is heating up.

Elson alleged in court filings that White harassed her, and that he’s unfit to parent their two children. Yesterday, White hit back, filing a motion that strongly contradicts Elson’s version of events. ”The reason for filing this response is that Mr. White does not want to be portrayed as something he is not: violent toward his wife and children,” the countermotion reads, according to Rolling Stone.

White’s filing cites emails from Elson to White in which she calls him an “amazing father” as recently as May 19. She also left the children in White’s care for 10 days just after she filed for a restraining order.

So I’m guessing that’s a “no” on the joint anniversary party.

In “happier” times, White and Elson threw a party in Nashville after ending their marriage. “We remain dear and trusted friends,” the couple said in a statement. “In honor of that time shared, we are throwing a divorce party.”

About 20 percent of sales at Divorcepartysupply.com are in the New York City region, according to the company.

Family therapist Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil said divorce parties end the “shame and blame” surrounding a breakup and keep social circles intact.

“Very often people feel guilty, like, ‘If I’m friends with her, I can’t be friends with him,’” she said. “It eliminates a lot of guilt for everyone.”
