The Word: Check out Lady Gaga’s new ‘Applause’ video

The great thing about Lady Gaga is that you know her video won’t just be another three minutes of bored-looking models writhing in da club. No, it will, at the least, be a double shot of weirdness, straight up.

Lady Gaga’s new video for “Applause” is no exception. She cycles through so many looks and costumes that I’m not sure what’s a pop culture reference and what’s just weirdness. Choice moments include Gaga as a sort of David Bowie/duck hybrid (or a swan? A black swan? Layers within layers) and Gaga as the Venus de Milo, who also looks a fair amount like Beyonce.

Overall, I’m a fan of the video. It’s not quite as striking as some of Gaga’s earlier work, but it seems like it’s reaching for something more honest. But then, maybe I just think that because you can actually see her face in this one. Watch it yourself below.

Gaga is safe for work throughout the video, which is unusual for her of late: She recently posed topless in V Magazine.

“I thought about Pop Art and how the dominant subject matter was always the celebrity or the pop-culture icon on the canvas, and then I thought to myself, But what I have tried endlessly to become through my work is a celebration of my differences through art, with myself as the canvas, as opposed to me as the subject matter, being put on the canvas,” she told the magazine.
