The Word: Jason Sudeikis stole a life vest from a plane

Jason Sudeikis had his own childhood indiscretions.
Jason Sudeikis had his own childhood indiscretions.

I’m not sure if this story is cute or sociopathic. Maybe both? That seems par for the course for Jason Sudeikis.

The comedy star plays a drug smuggler in “We’re the Millers,” and while he’s never sneaked drugs across the border, he has committed theft on a plane while traveling with his family as a kid. “We must have been flying over a body of water because they had those life preservers under the seat — the kind where you pull the cord and it blows up.I just wanted to try that, so I took one and put it in my bag, took it off the plane. I wasn’t going to use it at my grandma’s in case it made a big noise or something — and I wanted to show my friends,” he told GQ.

Luckily for the next person to sit in that seat, Sudeikis didn’t get away with his crime — a startled security guard found it in his bag before the next flight. It’s a good thing Sudeikis didn’t try that recently. He would’ve had to film “Saturday Night Live” from Guantanamo.

Being a celebrity is a bit of a Faustian bargain, I guess. On the one hand you’re rich and beautiful and beloved and can afford really nice sunglasses. But on the other, David Blaine can just show up at your house and do magic at you at any time.

I assume that’s written into the rich-and-famous contract, anyway. That’s the only explanation I can think of for why Olivia Wilde let him in when he showed up at the house she shares with Sudeikis.
