The Word: One Direction’s Zayn Malik is engaged

Sorry, 14-year-old girls who feel that being in love with Harry Styles is too obvious: His bandmate is off the market. Zayn Malik just got engaged.

Speculation grew that he’d proposed to his girlfriend Perrie Edwards, a singer in Little Mix (which I assume is one of those British things that aren’t allowed to leave the country, like Jane Austen’s jewelry) after she arrived at the premiere of the One Direction film “This Is Us” sporting an engagement ring. Today, Edwards’ mother confirmed the engagement in a radio interview with Real Radio. “They got engaged on Sunday and it was absolutely lovely,” she shared. “It’s wonderful because Zayn’s absolutely gorgeous and Perrie loves him to pieces.”

Maybe they can get Zayn’s bandmate to twerk at the wedding. Harry Styles was a guest at the recent Teen Choice Awards, safely ensconced in the audience after his band had opened the show, when hosts Darren Criss and Lucy Hale approached with a twerk request. Styles looked horrified, which made me respect him more than ever before, and muttered something about how he was wearing the wrong trousers, before he acquiesced and graced the world with the most diffident, British two seconds of twerking ever. Check it out.
