The Word: Tatiana Maslany joins ‘Parks and Recreation’

Tatiana Maslany, star of “Orphan Black,” will guest star on “Parks and Recreation” this fall, presumably in an attempt to break the Internet.

The wildly popular Maslany, who rivals kittens for the number of GIFs of her clogging up Tumblr, plays half a dozen roles as a set of clones in “Orphan Black.” Presumably on “Parks and Recreation” she’ll only play one — not much is known about her role, except that she’ll be a love interest for would-be ladies’ man Tom Haverford (Aziz Ansari). However, “Parks and Rec” does have a doppelganger episode coming up, so we’ll see. Maybe we’ll get multiple Maslanys yet.

Maslany is only scheduled for a two-episode arc — probably a good thing. Tumblr would crack under the strain of any more.

After several years of stability, the “Parks and Recreation” cast will lose two key members at once this year. Rashida Jones, who plays “beautiful nurse” Ann Perkins, and Rob Lowe, who plays the impossibly cheerful Chris Traeger, will both exit the show this season after the 13th episode, set to air in February.

In a statement, showrunner Michael Schur confirmed that he was working on a story arc culminating in both characters’ exits. “We’ve been working on their storyline (on and off) for four seasons now, and heading into this year, with the two of them contemplating parenthood, it felt like a natural time to move them into the next phase,” he said in a statement.
