The Word: Watch Shailene Woodley bleed in new ‘Divergent’ trailer
Last night’s MTV Video Music Awards were the site of so much boy band-reuniting and Miley-stripping and Harry Styles-dissing that it’s easy to forget they also featured the trailer for one of the most hotly anticipated films of next year: “Divergent,” based on the hit dystopian young adult novel.
“Divergent” stars Shailene Woodley as a teen in a society with strictly divided classes who leaves her family to join the warrior caste. The trailer offers plenty of what makes the book so fun: jumping off high things, throwing knives, kissing sensitive boys who must spend a lot of time in the gym and an arbitrarily repressive society against which to rebel. Plus it’s got Woodley, who’s got the market cornered on YA adaptations. This should be a fun one.
Parents of morose teenagers be warned: The next big trend in films for young adults could make the mood at home even darker.
Vampires, werewolves and boy wizards are out; dystopia is in. Having seen the popularity of “The Hunger Games,” movie studios are rolling out films that explore darker themes.
Summit Entertainment’s “Divergent” and “Ender’s Game,” and Sony Pictures’ “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones” are all aimed at the lucrative audience of young adults.
