The Word: Cecily Strong joins ‘Weekend Update’ on ‘Saturday Night Live’

For Weekend Update, I’m Seth Meyers, and I’m no longer the new guy.

Cecily Strong, who joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live” just last season, will join Seth Meyers at the anchor desk for “Weekend Update,” the show’s fake news segment.

It’s a testament to how big a splash she made last year with characters like “The girl you wish you hadn’t started a conversation with at a party,” since the desk usually goes to more seasoned performers. But SNL is sort of starting over this year — the show lost a large chunk of its cast and added six new performers, meaning Strong is suddenly one of the more senior members.

“Cecily, from the first show, was right there,” Lorne Michaels told the New York Times. “She exploded.”

So what is one of the famous faces who departed SNL recently up to now? Not twerking. Andy Samberg is so over it.

Samberg, who is now starring in “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” spoke to E! News about Miley Cyrus’ twerking scandal at the VMAs. “I used to be [Miley Cyrus'] twerkologist,” the comedian said.

“I’ve severed ties with her in that regard. … I’ve kind of been aware of twerking a lot longer than the mainstream media, quite frankly, and now it’s getting drilled into the dirt. It’s a little bit boring for me.”
