The Word: New Hollywood is under construction in China

Chinese entrepreneur Wang Jianlin wants to bring Hollywood to its best customers: the Chinese.

Jianlin, who made much of his fortune manufacturing movie screens, announced plans yesterday to build a massive film complex in the Chinese city of Qingdao. According to the New York Times, the Qingdao Oriental Movie Metropolis will cost between $4.9 billion and $8.2 billion, and it will include movie studios, an amusement park, apartment complexes and a hospital.

Stars like Nicole Kidman and Leonardo DiCaprio turned out for a red carpet ceremony at the announcement, which suggests that the American film industry is taking Jianlin’s plan seriously — and it sounds like it should. “It is estimated that China’s film box office revenue will surpass North America’s by 2018 and will double it by 2023 — that is why I believe the future of the world’s film industry is in China,” Jianlin said.

He also sounded a bit more like a Bond villain than he perhaps intended. “Those in the world film industry who realize this first and are among the first to cooperate with China,” he said, “will be the first to reap the benefits.”
