The Word: Lorde is the youngest chart-topper since 1988

Yep, I’m officially out of touch. A week ago, I barely knew that Lorde existed. This week, she hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts with her song “Royals.”

Lorde, who was born in 1996, which is a good thing to remind yourself when you want to be depressed about how much you’ve accomplished, is the youngest musician to have a  No. 1 hit since Tiffany’s 1988 song “Could’ve Been.” “Royals” bumped Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” out of the top spot that it’s held for the past two weeks.

New Zealand-born Lorde, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, told Billboard that taking the top spot “feels like a combination of my birthday, Christmas and washing my hair after a month of doing so,” because she is still young enough to enjoy birthdays.

Whatever. I don’t even care that I am fast becoming with a pop star who is too young to remember 9/11. I’ll buy her beer if she’ll teach me to do my hair like hers.

The singer is already adjusting to life as a pop star: Earlier this week she apologized for saying something kind of mean about Taylor Swift.
