The Word: 106 ‘Doctor Who’ episodes discovered in the last place you’d expect

Peter Capaldi is the twelfth incarnation of Doctor Who.
Peter Capaldi will be the 12th incarnation of the Doctor.

“Doctor Who” fans, rejoice: The long-running TV show just got even longer.

The British science fiction serial has been running on the BBC since 1963. Back then, no one knew about DVDs or Netflix or just how obsessive science fiction fans would become, so many of the original recordings of early episodes were lost, damaged or wiped.

But, just in time for the show’s 50th anniversary in November, a treasure trove of 106 lost episodes have been recovered — in Ethiopia.

Yes, apparently Ethiopia has been quietly enjoying vintage “Doctor Who” for the past half-century, little suspecting how happy they could make a bunch of nerds. The BBC is now in negotiation with the Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency to recover the copies, which were sold to the Ethiopian station between 1964 and 1969, after the first and only time those episodes were broadcast in Britain.

So what are these lost masterpieces about? For one thing, there’s apparently a four-episode arc about the Doctor and his companion hanging out with King Richard during his battle with Saracen leader Saladin during the Crusades. Uh, are we sure we want to see these? Sensibilities have changed since the ’60s…
