The Word: Why Donald Glover is leaving ‘Community’
Abed and no one in the mooorning.
Donald Glover (Troy) is leaving “Community.” He’ll exit the cult comedy series after the fifth episode of the upcoming season.
Many fans assumed that Glover was leaving to focus on his music career — he’s also the rapper Childish Gambino. However, it sounds like it’s quite a bit more complicated than that. Glover posted a series of handwritten notes on Instagram, detailing his fears and worries written on hotel stationery. “I didn’t leave Community to rap. I don’t wanna rap,” he says. “I wanna be on my own. I’ve been sick this year. I’ve seen a bunch of people die this year.”
Glover also posted a laundry list of fears, including “I’m afraid ["Community" creator and showrunner] Dan Harmon hates me,” “I’m afraid I’ll be Tyrese,” and “I’m scared my girl will get pregnant at not the exact time we want.”
The comedian also said that his label was resisting his desire to put out his album in December, because “It’s not a Christmas album and I’m not a big artist.”
Regardless of the specifics, it sounds like Glover’s going through a tough time. I hope that Residence Inn Marriott puts an extra mint on his pillow. That generally makes me feel better.
