Take a good look at each and every one of Chris Hemsworth’s magnificent muscles in “Thor 2: The Dark World.” They’re about to disappear.

The elder Hemsworth is going from the world of superheroes to a brutal survival tale. In his new film “Heart of the Sea,” Ron Howard’s movie of the true story that inspired “Moby Dick,” he’ll play a sailor who turns to cannibalism. “A bunch of sailors in a whaling ship get struck by a whale, the ship sinks and they jump onto the small rafts and drift for 90 days. And basically they begin to die and eat each other,” he told Jimmy Kimmel.

Hemsworth hasn’t resorted to eating human flesh, but the thought has surely crossed his mind: To wreak the brutal physical transformation the role requires, he’s currently eating 500 calories a day: just a few small salads and scraps of protein. “It’s funny — you’ve never heard 15 big, burly guys playing sailors talk about their calorie count, what they should and shouldn’t eat, what their cheat meal is going to be,” he says.

Chris knows he’s not done playing Thor, right? Prestige-y Oscar movies are all very well, but if Thor is too scrawny to fill out his armor in “Avengers 2,” I shall be annoyed.
