The Word: Lorde thinks Disney stars are ‘f—ing mental’

Lorde’s hit song of the summer, “Royals,” is all about her bewilderment at the culture of excess that’s permeated pop music. So of course when she’s asked about current pop stars, she doesn’t exactly gush.

Lorde says her fresh take on music comes from her normal upbringing. ”The difference between those kids and me,” she told GQ, “is that I grew up completely normally and went to parties and had that experience. I am way less inclined to be like, ‘Look! I’m f—ing mental!’”

I hope she’s right, because I love her and am on a quest to style my hair like hers. But Justin Bieber wasn’t “f—ing mental” after only a year of fame, either. It’s clearly true that growing up in the fame machine generally messes a person up, but uh, Lorde’s only 16. She’s still growing up. Plenty of time to go nuts yet. If she doesn’t watch out in a few years her bodyguards will be sneaking her out of brothels under a sheet.
