Oxford Dictionaries declare ‘selfie’ 2013′s word of the year

We think the smarties at Oxford Dictionaries are trying to suck up to Kim Kardashian.

What other explanation could there be for their selection of “selfie” as Word of the Year? Is Word of the Year even a thing? Stop trying to make Word of the Year happen, Oxford Dictionaries.

The official explanation for Oxford Dictionaries’ choice of fetch selfie is the word’s sudden ubiquity. “It’s not be a new word,” their blog explains. ”But our Word of the Year need not be a new word. However, it does need to demonstrate some kind of prominence over the preceding year or so and selfie certainly fits the bill. It seems like everyone who is anyone has posted a selfie somewhere on the Internet. If it is good enough for the Obamas or the Pope, then it is good enough for Word of the Year.”

Whatever, guys. All I can say about this clear attempt to get RTed by selfie addicts like Kim Kardashian and Miley Cyrus is please let me know if it works, because I would also like to be friends with celebrities. This is The Word, after all. The Word’s Word of the Year could totally be a thing.

I have to admit that the art of selfies has been significantly refined this year. Celebs like Chris Pratt and Kim Kardashian used them to show off their slammin’ bods. Beyonce debuted a bold new haircut. Miley Cyrus took one in a wedding dress, apparently to quell rumors that her engagement to Liam Hemsworth was in trouble (it was, of course). And, of course, regular folks took selfies too. Usually at funerals.
