When actress AnnaLynne McCord was starring in “90210,” her character, Naomi, was raped by an acquaintance. McCord broke down in sobs while filming the scene, leading her costars to praise her powerful performance. But it wasn’t just a performance: McCord, too, had been raped.

McCord, who now appears on “Dallas,” tells the story of her rape in an essay for Cosmo. After moving to LA at 18 to pursue an acting career, she allowed a friend to crash at her house one night. “We sat on the bed and talked for a while, then I fell asleep,” she writes. When she woke up, she says, she was being raped.

McCord demanded that her attacker stop. In the morning, she waited in the car until he left. At first she was too traumatized to tell her friends and family what had happened. Her difficult childhood made it harder for her to accept that it wasn’t her fault: McCord grew up in a conservative Christian household and say her parents often beat her with a ruler or paddle. “After all, as I had learned in my childhood, people who loved me hurt me,” she says.

Her despair was such that McCord turned suicidal. Eventually, however, she began to rebuild, and now finds solace in working with a human trafficking charity in Cambodia. The whole thing is worth a read if you’re up for a bummer on a Friday morning.
