Dueling Elvis Weekend

Dueling Elvis Weekend

lvis Presley was one of the most important figures of the 20th century. He is the best-selling solo artist in the history of popular music and a cultural icon, often referred to as the “King of Rock and Roll” or “The King”. Elvis had such a versatile voice that he achieved unusually wide success encompassing many other music genres, including country and gospel. He was nominated for 14 Grammys and won 3, along with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. His family moved to Memphis, Tennessee when he was 13 years old. He began his singing career in Memphis in 1954, working with Sun Records owner, Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of black music to a wider audience. Elvis was accompanied by guitarist, Scotty Moore, and bassist, Bill Black. Elvis was the most important popularizer of ROCKABILLY, an up-tempo, backbeat-driven hybrid of country music and rhythm and blues. RCA Victor acquired Elvis’s contract in a deal arranged by Elvis’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker.

Presley’s first RCA single, “Heartbreak Hotel”, released in January 1956 was a number-one hit. He became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll with a series of television appearances and chart-topping records. His uninhibited performance style made him enormously popular, and controversial. In November 1956 he made his film debut in Love Me Tender.

After Elvis had starred in 30 more Hollywood films and his movie contract ended, Colonel Tom Parker maneuvered a deal with NBC that committed the network to both finance a theatrical feature, and broadcast a Christmas special. Recorded in late June in California, the special, called simply, Elvis, aired on December 3, 1968. Later known as the ’68 Comeback Special, the show featured lavishly staged studio productions, as well as songs performed with a band in front of a small audience – Presley’s first live performances since 1961. The live segments saw Presley clad in tight black leather, singing and playing guitar in an uninhibited style reminiscent of his early rock and roll days. By January 1969 the single, “Dream”, written for the special, reached number 12. The soundtrack album broke into the top ten. The special reminded Presley of what he had not been able to do for years; so he formed a new band, hand-picking each musician himself and set his sights on touring again and working in the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas.

The TCB Band (Takin’ Care of Business) was a group of professional musicians who formed the core rhythm section of Elvis Presley’s band from August 1969 until his death in 1977. The members were James Burton (lead guitar), Jerry Scheff (bass), John Wilkinson (rhythm guitar), Larry Muhoberac (keyboards) and Ronnie Tutt (drums). They first appeared live at Presley’s Las Vegas initial performance at the Hotel International on July 31, 1969.

Lamar Peters won first place at the 2010 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest in Atlantic City. He has been touring across the U.S. for the past six years playing the role of Elvis as a member of the “Legends in Concert” cast as well as in his own “Rock and Roll Revue” production. Like Elvis, Lamar Peters has performed at several casinos and has also appeared live at fundraisers for the St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, as well as for The American Red Cross. On Saturday, August 17 at 8 o’clock Lamar Peters recreates Elvis Presley’s celebrated ’68 Comeback Special in a live performance segment at B.B. King’s. Later that night, Saturday, August 17 starting at 10:30pm, Lamar Peters will recreate a Las Vegas casino style Elvis concert with the utmost attention to detail, and the same high energy as Elvis and his TCB band displayed while headlining two sold-out shows a day in Las Vegas from 1969 to 1976.
