Dueling Elvis Weekend
Elvis Presley was one of the most important figures of the 20th century. He is the best-selling solo artist in the history of popular music and a cultural icon, often referred to as the “King of Rock and Roll” or “the King”. Elvis had such a versatile voice that he achieved unusually wide success encompassing many other music genres, including country and gospel. He was nominated for 14 Grammys and won 3 along with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on Jan 8, 1935; his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee when he was 13 years old. He began his singing career in Memphis in 1954 working with Sun Records owner, Sam Phillips, who wanted to bring the sound of black music to a wider audience. Elvis was accompanied by guitarist, Scotty Moore, and bassist, Bill Black. Elvis was the most important popularizer of ROCKABILLY, an up-tempo, backbeat-driven hybrid of country music and rhythm and blues.RCA Victor acquired Elvis’s contract in a deal arranged by Elvis’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Presley’s first RCA single, “Heartbreak Hotel”, released in January 1956, was a number-one hit. He became the leading figure of the newly popular sound of rock and roll with a series of television appearances and chart-topping records. His uninhibited performance style made him enormously popular – and controversial. In November1956, he made his film debut in Love Me Tender.
Rhythm Bound is a popular New York City based four piece rockabilly combo, fronted by Rich Hopkins on lead vocals and the rhythm guitar. His brother, Tom Hopkins, plays the upright bass and Brian Hack plays the electric guitar and is also the band’s primary song writer.
Jeff Dilena plays the drums. The members of Rhythm Bound have performed with and toured America with rockabilly legends Wanda Jackson, Robert Gordon, The Rockats & Brian Setzer. Rhythm Bound is about as stripped down and as raw as it gets these days. What they do is ROCKABILLY MUSIC in its original form, played exactly the same way, using the same equipment used by their hero, Elvis Presley, and the musicians who accompanied him during the early part of his career. On Friday, August 16, Rhythm Bound will recreate Elvis Presley’s Sun Records era rockabilly music with the utmost attention to detail, as well as perform his early rock and roll, traditional country music and gospel hits recorded by RCA Victor. – See more at: http://www.bbkingblues.com/bio.php?id=2841#sthash.G5F8pXVc.dpuf
