Half Moon Run
Half Moon Run – MisterWives, Gospels, Flagship
“It was buzz heaven…Half Moon Run were borne aloft through the streets to be crowned Buzz Kings Of The Festival.” — NME at M for Montreal, November, 2011
“What most agreed was the best new band of the week, Half Moon Run. The Montreal trio match songwriting (and harmonies) of ’60′s folk rock with the atmospherics of Radiohead. I was instantly impressed” — Brooklyn Vegan at M for Montreal, November, 2011
Half Moon Run is a talented young trio from Ottawa, Ontario and Comox, British Columbia. It was in a studio situated in Montreal’s Mile-End district, through the hardships of time constraints and flatlined bank accounts, that the trio bonded and created their unique sound, fusing together the restless elements of indie, pop and folk with beautiful rhythmic harmonies, delicate guitar lines and a hint of warm electronica.
MisterWives was formed in 2012 where the 3 New York natives set out to produce, and perform their independently composed music. Their sound has been described as indie-pop-soul and has been well received in some of New York’s most notable venues. The core members include Mandy Lee (vocals/keys) William Hehir (bass) and Etienne Bowler (drums).Their live set however incorporates other musicians that contribute sax, trumpet, guitar, and strings to their well-rounded sound. The band is currently working on their EP that will be released in the spring of 2013.
Gospels is Alex Frenkel, Mike Gordon, Alex Marans, Gabe Garzón-Montano and Owen Murphy. Taking up residence under one roof in Forest Hills, NY, they set about building their house into a 3-floor recording studio, where they have recorded their first EP, “Animal Feelings.”
Over the past several years The American South has been teeming with innovative music and Charlotte North Carolina’s own Flagship are poised to be the next to carve their name in the bark. Without flinching at the independent music world’s overwrought penchant for novelty, Flagship harnesses the un-teachable quality of transparent emotional depth.
Flagship is a musical force that approaches a …wide spectrum of musical landscapes with natural fluidity. Steering the ship at the helm, Drake Margolnick’s chameleon like ability to alter his vocal approach to jive with a particular song’s mood is key to the group’s tendency to make songs with severe emotional depth. Whether offering a fearsome, throat shredding, angst ridden scream in the western romp, “Native on The Run” or a warm heartbreaking falsetto over shimmering guitars and swirling organs on “Older,” Margolnick gets were he needs to go vocally without difficulty or showmanship. Assuredly, this effortless ability to match the feeling his band mates conjure has everything to do with his poignancy at the lyrical plate. When Margolnick mourns, “I lost my baby” you feel it, because he feels it, and his band feels it.
