Johnny Showcase – Mother Feather, Red 40 & the Last Groovement

Johnny Showcase is an electrifying experience. An 8-piece absurdist soul outfit based in Philadelphia, it is an innovative, joyful tour-de- force that blissfully toes the line between performance art and a psychedelic soul revival, with infectious original music that is as funky as it is hilarious. Over the last five years, they have honed their craft in the Philly theatre and music scenes, gaining a massive following and propelling Johnny to something that of a funky Philly folk hero legend.

Johnny is the brain-child of theater artist/ musician David Sweeny, who inhabits the character. A sweaty, charismatic showman from Rhode Island who is equal parts Andy Kaufman and Prince, he is surrounded by a rag tag group of performers, including a spiritual adviser named Rumi Kitchen (Michael Baker of The Spinning Leaves), two vacuous vocalists collectively named The Truth (Adrienne Mackey and Liz Filios), and backed by knife sharp band the Mystic Ticket.

In 2009, they staged a sold out run of a fantastical, unauthorized Prince inspired odyssey Purr, Pull, Reign as part of the 2009 Philadelphia Live Arts/ Fringe Festival. 2011 saw the release of their debut album Love is the Message, co-produced with Henry Hirsch (Lenny Kravitz, Mick Jagger), followed up in 2012 with the self-produced EP Mystic Ticket I: The Pump Fake.

Mother Feather plays pop cock-rock fed by the wildfire of pure inspiration.

“If you’re feeling this you’re my next victim,” front-woman Ann Courtney intones with steely-eyed confidence, assuring the audience of motherfeathers of their submission to the cult. With their ferocious and enthralling live show, Mother Feather has ignited a wildfire of followers since hitting the New York club scene in 2010.

Epic songs warrant larger-than-life costumes and dance, and a garishly bedazzled Courtney and hype-woman sidekick Elizabeth Carena slither, thrust, and high-kick their way through a set that invokes Marc Bolan’s cheeky swagger, Bowie’s braggadocio, and the howl and shimmy of a “To Bring You My Love”-era PJ Harvey. This is pop cock-rock: anthemic riffs, now-or-never bravado, and tight dance beats bolstered by pop precision and purity of mission.

“The strength this band exudes, and Ann Courtney especially, is like young Marlon Brando’s strength on-screen: the sensitivity of the guy is unnerving, you immediately want to fuck him and at the same time you never know if he might just rip your damn head off.” – Huffington Post

Hawaiian Punch’s got nothing on the juice this tangy outfit’s got dripping down their legs. Red 40 & The Last Groovement is a little naughty, a little trashy, and a lot of sexy. Like the legendary yeti, appearances of their funk/disco/R&B pop up like art stores in Williamsburg. R40&TLG was most recently seen upstaging the fireworks at Race Street Pier’s July 4th celebration. Red is also available for your child’s next birthday party.Red 40 & The Last Groovement is the creation of Martha Stuckey and Alex Bechtel, alums of the Pig Iron School for Advanced Performance Training and performers about town. Now featuring Josa Lazas, guitarist of Philadelphia band, Cruiser.
