La Belle et la Bete

BAM presents a magical La Belle et la Bête that merges live performance and virtual reality.Lemieux Pilon 4D Art refashions the timeless story with dream-like theatrical effects to illustrate how love transcends surface beauty

Lemieux Pilon 4D Art, which dazzled BAM audiences with La Tempête (2006 Next Wave), a seamless and magical integration of video technology and traditional stagecraft, returns with La Belle et la Bête. In this contemporary take on the classic tale, Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon transform the familiar story into a grand feat of theatrical prowess and open live performance to another dimension by blending real and virtual actors and sets to achieve a new standard in multimedia performance.

In this 90-minute English-language presentation, “Belle” is a contemporary young painter struggling with the death of her mother. She is drawn to the disfigured and isolated “Beast” as he works to overcome his feelings of abandonment and hopelessness following the loss of a lover. While the consequence of their encounter unfolds, “La Dame,” a fairy who harbors a lingering love for the Beast, lurches on the sidelines.

The specters of the characters’ pasts are brought to life in illusory holographic images with whom the three actors seamlessly interact. The virtual sets change with fluidity and openness, liberating the theater from its physical boundaries and enabling the characters to evolve in an endless imaginary world: a mirror exploding into shards of virtual glass, a ghost horse charging through a tangled forest, or a phantom moving in for a shadowy embrace. La Belle et la Bête evokes the redemptive power of love by breaking the boundaries between real and virtual, past and present.
