Hailed for combining the best qualities of both the European and American traditions of quartet playing, the Orion Quartet serves as the Quartet-in-Residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. The group’s recent concert appearances have included such music centers of the world as New York City, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Boston, London, and Vienna. Always a Philadelphia favorite—the Orion are joined by two their close friends (also frequent guest artists with PCMS) in Michael Tree and Marcy Rosen for a rare performance of Frank Bridge’s String Sextet—this marvelous piece, though important in its own right, is important historically for its place. It is a post-Brahmsian work, which though it shows some influence of French impressionist ideas, is developed entirely originally in Bridge’s own idiomatic style.
