Pretty and Nice – MiniBoone and Miracles of Modern Science

Pretty & Nice are a Boston quartet, capable of creating joyous feelings. Songs born on sunny porches with acoustic guitars, transcribed to electrics, arranged with a rhythm section, and slingshot skyward. It’s an advanced pop crash course, and your brain may have trouble keeping up with your feet.

From their Pink & Blue debut to the Hardly Art-released Get Young and throughout the forthcoming LP with a particularly golden title, the music of Pretty & Nice is engineered for multiple listens. Songs blossom multiple times, tightrope walking between complexity and accessibility with tremendous balance. The Onion’s AV Club says it well: “The band buries post-punk hooks under feverish ranting and the trash-can clang of robotic electro… Riffs are spot-welded to jerky beats, and the whole sound hinges on a gleeful self-deconstruction.”

Miniboone once described themselves as the fruit of a forgotten, exhausted and half drunken promise made by underground rock and roll to American Top 40, and then, much later, they announced that they’re finally releasing their debut record.
When we say “Miniboone”, we’re talking about a band that consists of Craig Barnes, James Keary and Doug Schrashun on guitars, keyboards and vocals, Drew St. Aubin on drums and Tony Aquilino on bass guitar. They are named after a science experiment and, if you ask nicely, will happily tell you about the time they got to visit the world’s second largest particle collider. Since their first appearance in world of rock music back in 2008, they’ve shared stages with acts as diverse and acclaimed as the B-52s, Art Brut, and Real Estate, and brought their witches’ brew of caffeinated, unabashedly-delivered power pop to audiences at festivals such as South By Southwest, Northeast, CMJ and Bonnaroo. Plus, their live show, along with the two EPs and one 7″ they’ve released to date, has earned praise over the years from the likes of the Village Voice, NPR, the L Magazine and Spinner.

If you see Miracles of Modern Science loading their classical instruments into a New York rock club and mistake them for another band’s string section, they don’t mind. It makes for a bigger surprise when you hear what they can do with just mandolin, violin, cello, upright bass, and drums. Miracles of Modern Science push the limits of these antique instruments, reaching heights and depths unexplored by guitars.

The band began at Princeton University when vocalist/bassist Evan Younger and mandolinist Josh Hirshfeld discovered a shared boredom with the status quo of pop and rock. “We felt there was a lack of fun music that was challenging and a lack of challenging music that was fun,” says Hirshfeld. They found kindred spirits in other restless musicians from the school’s orchestras and jazz bands: conductor-by-day cellist Geoff McDonald, Aussie violinist Kieran Ledwidge, and finally powerhouse drummer Tyler Pines, who spurred them to plug their miniature orchestra into amps.
