Polling stations struggled to open in Haiti’s capital yesterday as
voting got off to a slow and confused start in elections roiled by a
cholera epidemic, political tensions and voter uncertainty.
The death toll from Haiti’s cholera epidemic has reached more than 900,
and the disease is present in six of the 10 provinces of the
earthquake-battered country, the Health Ministry said yesterday.
Angry earthquake survivors in Haiti disrupted an attempted evacuation
Thursday of a resettlement camp as Tropical Storm Tomas bore down on the
poor Caribbean country already reeling from a cholera epidemic and
destruction from the quake.
Government officials and aid partners in earthquake- and cholera-ravaged
Haiti scrambled yesterday to prepare crowded quake survivor camps and
coastal towns for a possible hit by a hurricane later this week.
