A young Bronx woman was arrested after she put her dead newborn in a plastic bag and threw it down a garbage chute on Saturday, police said.

Ariel Devonish-Francis, 19, gave birth to the premature baby at home and then sought medical treatment at Albert Einstein University Hospital, where she told hospital workers how she had disposed of the body. They notified police, who recovered the remains that evening.

An autopsy revealed that the baby was stillborn, the New York Post reported.

“They found the baby in one of those small black bags you get at the deli when you buy food,” building superintendent Jose Garcia, 50, told the Daily News.

Devonish-Francis was charged with misappropriation of a cadaver.

A Harlem woman jumped to her death from her eighth floor apartment window while holding her baby on Wednesday, but the baby survived the fall.

The woman fell on her back and the 10-month-old child bounced off her body, the New York Post reported.

Cindy Bacharach, 44, leaped from her window at The Sutton co-op building at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, leaving behind a long suicide letter in which she blamed herself for her baby’s undisclosed medical conditions. Bacharach suffered from acute postpartum depression. She and her husband were fighting just hours before the suicide, neighbors told the Post.

Keston was taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition and is expected to survive.

Bacharach was a lawyer who worked in the state Supreme Court system since 1997.

The baby who was born after his parents were killed in a Brooklyn car crash on Sunday has reportedly died.

Community Spokesman Isaac Abraham said the baby died around 5:30 a.m. on Monday.

Police are still searching for the driver and a passenger of the BMW vehicle that crashed into the car carrying Nachman and Raizy Glauber. The couple, both 21, was on the way to the hospital because the pregnant woman was not feeling well.

Doctors had delivered the premature baby via C-section. A funeral for the couple was held on Sunday.

Justin Bieber‘s celebrations for his 19th birthday didn’t go so swell Friday, leading the Canadian pop star to tweet a simple, “worst birthday.” And while many of his fans quickly leapt to the conclusion that the paparazzi were responsible for his dejection, it reportedly had more to do with the security at London’s Cirque du Soir nightclub, who wouldn’t let some of his entourage in because they couldn’t prove they were over 18, according to E! News. Bieber still managed to have some fun — dropping a reported $12,000 on bottle service for his pals — but the incident with security put an early stop to the festivities. “I think Justin and his friends had a good time,” a source says. “He had a complete separate area in the club, and most of his guests arrived earlier. He was, of course, not amused that some of his close friends were refused entrance.” But the folks behind the club are eager to stay friends with Bieber despite the kerfuffle. “Justin Bieber visits Cirque Du Soir regularly, and he and his friends are always welcome, as long the members of the group are legally old enough to enter the club,” a club spokesman explains. “This was simply a matter of regulation that we must adhere to.”

Lindsay Lohan appears to be living it up as much as she can in advance of her March 18 trial — and even skipped out the latest court appearance related to the case to stay in New York and go clubbing instead, according to Us Weekly. Maybe she knows it doesn’t look too good for her this time around when it comes to avoiding jail time, especially considering the drubbing her new lawyer, Mark Heller, has been getting from Judge James Dabney. After dismissing Heller’s motions to have the case put on a “slow track,” Dabney cautioned that Heller would need someone by his side versed in California law or “Miss Lohan is going to have to come in here and waive her right to have competent attorneys versed in California law and procedure.”

With his first starring role in an action film, “The Last Stand,” flopping at the box office, it may come as no surprise that Arnold Schwarzenegger is looking at new avenues of employment. Coincidentally, the former California governor has recently signed on to be executive editor of Muscle & Fitness and Flex magazines, two bodybuilding titles. “It was in these magazines that I found the spark that inspired me to start lifting weights, and eventually move to America and realize my dreams, and I’m proud to return as executive editor,” Schwarzenegger says in a statement. Over the course of his career, Schwarzenegger has been featured on the covers of the two magazines more than 60 times.

Former “Sesame Street” puppeteer Kevin Clash previously denied the batch of allegations against him from young men that he’d had sexual relationships with them while they were minors, and now Clash wants the three related lawsuit dismissed, according to TMZ. “There are two applicable types of statutes of limitations, a six-year one based on when the right of action has accrued, and a three-year one based on when the alleged victim turned eighteen and was therefore no longer under the disability of being a minor,” Clash’s attorney writes in motions filed last week in New York. Jeff Herman, who is representing the three plaintiffs, doesn’t think this gambit will work. “It should be noted his motion does not say the abuse did not happen, just that it is too late to file the complaints,” he points out to E! News.

UPDATE: A suspect in a hit-and-run that left two people and their unborn baby dead has surrendered to police, according to a report.

Julio Acevedo was arrested by cops in Pennsylvania this afternoon, according to the Daily News.

He surrendered to police officers in the parking lot of a store, the newspaper reported.

He was reportedly taken into an SUV with New York plates.

A little after midnight on Sunday, a car accident near the Brooklyn Navy Yard resulted in the death of two passengers, a married couple, according to police reports.

The woman was 24 weeks pregnant, police said. The baby was delivered premature at the hospital and survived.

Police believe that the couple was on their way to Long Island College Hospital for an OB/GYN check-up.

The accident occurred when a grey 2010 BMW sedan hit the driver’s side of a black livery cab. According to a law enforcement source, witnesses said the BMW was speeding.

The pregnant woman in the backseat of the cab was thrown from the vehicle on impact, police said.

Police sources noted that there is a stop sign on Wilson Street at Kent Avenue, but none on Kent Avenue. The cab was traveling westbound on Wilson Street, and the BMW was traveling northbound on Kent Avenue.

The occupants of the BMW reportedly jumped out of their car and ran away. Police said witnesses reported that the driver was male and the passenger was female.

The driver of the livery cab was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is in stable condition.

The couple in the backseat were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The man was taken to Beth Israel and the pregnant woman was taken to Bellevue.

Doctors at Bellevue were able to safely deliver the baby by Caesarean section post-mortem.

The baby’s parents, Nathan Gluber and Raizi Gluber, were 21 years old.

A three-year-old girl fell out of a window at 53-01 32nd Avenue in Queens Sunday afternoon, police reported.

Police received a 911 call at 2:33 p.m. and reported to the scene to find the baby on the ground outside. She was taken to Elmhurst Hospital and pronounced dead approximately three hours later.

The baby’s name was Rusroshi Barua, and she lived in apartment 5R.

The police do not suspect criminal wrong-doing, but an investigation is on-going.

UPDATE: The baby’s parents are Pattrick Julbe and and Jennifer Melendez, according to authorities.

Julbe, 27, double-parked in front of a Boost Mobile store at 71 East Kingsbridge Road and left the car running with Melendez and their 7-month-old daughter inside, cops say. He allegedly waved to Melendez from inside the store to get her to come inside to look at a phone case.

Melendez reportedly went inside the store, but immediately exited, and saw the car driving off with the baby still inside. She chased the car heading westbound on West Kingsbridge near University Avenue.

Julbe has ten prior arrests in as many years, ranging from assault to weapon and controlled substance possession.

No charges are being pressed against Julbe and Melendez so far, according to law enforcement sources.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male between the ages of 25 and 35, possibly Dominican.

There were three 911 calls related to the incident aside from the one made by Melendez. All three calls were made around 7:30 or 7:45 p.m., from payphones. Two of the calls came from the same payphone; those two were in Spanish. That caller informed the operator of the location of the stolen Jeep. However, authorities reportedly believe all three calls were made by the same person, and possibly the suspect, because of the caller’s knowledge of the incident and whereabouts of the car.

The car reportedly belongs to a Pennsylvania resident named Angel Luis Ramos who told police Julbe had permission to use his car.

A car robbery turned into a kidnapping last night when a man made off with a Jeep with an infant inside.

Police report that a man jumped into a 2005 Grand Cherokee when the occupants had stepped out, and sped away.

A 7-month-old baby girl was inside the car.

The theft occurred at around 6:30 p.m. last night. The car was found about two miles south at Goble Place and Jerome Avenue about an hour later. The baby was inside, unharmed.

The police caught the suspect on surveillance camera (video below) in a parking garage at 1521 Inwood Avenue, about a block away from where the car was found. The suspect had tried to park the car around 20 minutes after the theft.

DNAinfo reported that the vehicle’s occupants were the infant’s parents, who had parked their car on East Kingsbridge Road between Morris and Creston avenues, with the keys and the infant inside.

The police are requesting the public’s help in finding the suspect, who they describe as a heavy-set Hispanic man in a black and white striped shirt and a baseball cap.

We now know when to expect a royal birth announcement, as Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s first child is due this summer, St. James Palace announced. “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in July,” the statement reads. “The Duchess’s condition continues to improve since her stay in hospital last month.” As the statement says, the “baby” is due in July, so those hoping for royal twins will be disappointed.

Angelina Jolie is set to return to the director’s chair, choosing to adapt Laura Hillenbrand’s WWII survival story, “Unbroken,” as her second film, according to E! News. The story follows Louis Zamperini, an air force pilot who survived a crash and spent most of the war in a Japanese prison camp. “I read Laura Hillenbrand’s brilliant book and I was so moved by Louis Zamperini’s heroic story, I immediately began to fight for the opportunity to make this film,” Jolie says. Her directorial debut, “In the Land of Blood and Honey,” focused on the Bosnian war.

Gwen Stefani uses some interesting analogies when discussing reaching her 10th anniversary with husband Gavin Rossdale. “It’s fun to get to this point. Because you learn so much about somebody,” she tells Vogue. “It’s like these wars that go on and then you kind of get through to the other side, and it’s like, ‘Wow.’” The No Doubt singer also says she enjoys the compromise that comes from being parents. “Having kids takes the whole relationship to another place. Bubbles the Chimp, the furry longtime companion of Michael Jackson, has reportedly been dumped by the late singer’s family, according to the National Enquirer. The chimp has been relocated to the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Fla., though Jackson’s children have yet to come visit. “Bubbles was not provided for in Michael Jackson’s will,” a spokeswoman for the Center says. “They Jackson family has turned their back on Bubbles.”

Signs are pointing to Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton, according to ABC News. “Kate is very close to her sister, Pippa, and William is infinitely, in the same way, close to Prince Harry. So they are the obvious choice,” royal contributor Victoria Arbiter Brown says. “They were the best man and the chief bridesmaid at their wedding, they’re well-trusted, they’re family.”

Enough time has apparently passed for Jennifer Lopez to open up about the demise of her marriage to Marc Anthony. “I was going through a divorce and the breakup of a family, which was devastating to me because family means everything to me,” Lopez tells Hollywood Life of the breakup in July 2011. “I didn’t want to be the woman who stayed in bed for two months. I did do that a little, but I knew I had to get through it.”

Despite announcing in October that they’d separated, Danny DeVito and Rhea Pearlman aren’t actually all that separated — at least according to DeVito. When asked by Extra how he’s adjusting to life as a single man, DeVito says, “It’s not something you adjust to. Rhea and I are really close. Actually still together, just separate, but together.” In fact, DeVito insists divorce may not be in the cards for the “Cheers” alums. “We’re working on it,” he says when asked if a reconciliation might be on the way.

The recent hubbub over Angus T. Jones urging fans to stop watching his hit sitcom, “Two and a Half Men,” and calling the show “filth” was apparently nothing the folks at CBS couldn’t handle, at least according to network head Les Moonves. “I don’t think [the Angus situation has] quite been resolved, but after going through what we went through with Charlie Sheen, it’s been a piece of cake,” Moonves says in a statement to TMZ.

“The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news.”

The couple, officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, married in April last year, prompting a global media frenzy and there has been much speculation, particularly in U.S. gossip magazines, about a possible pregnancy.

The statement said Catherine was in the King Edward VII Hospital in Central London suffering from very acute morning sickness. She is likely to remain there for several days.

It said her condition required supplementary hydration and nutrients. There was no detail about when the baby was due, with the statement stating the pregnancy was in its early stages.

“I’m delighted by the news that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting a baby,” Prime Minister David Cameron said on his Twitter website. “They will make wonderful parents.”

William, Queen Elizabeth’s grandson, is second in line to the British throne, and their first child will become the third in succession when he or she is born.

Last year Britain and other Commonwealth countries which have the queen as their monarch agreed to change the rules of royal succession so that sons would no longer have precedence as heir, regardless of age.

The agreement also means an end to a ban on a future monarch marrying a Catholic, a stipulation dating back some 300 years.

William and Catherine currently live in north Wales where the prince is based as a Royal Air Force search and rescue pilot.

While he made no mention of his split from Selena Gomez, Bieber did address his critics after winning his first award of the night, for Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist. “I want to say this is for all the haters who thought I was just here for one of two years,” Bieber said from the stage. “I feel like I’m going to be here for a very long time.”

A close friend of Prince William and Kate Middelton insists the royal couple is set to announce something big next month, prompting speculation that a baby is on the way. “They’re planning to make an announcement in December,” Jessica Hay, a former schoolmate of Middleton’s and a guest at their wedding, tells New Idea magazine, adding that the Duchess of Cambridge has gained a bit of weight recently and that “William and Kate are focused on starting a family.” How focused, exactly? They’ve apparently already discussed the number of children they want to have — two — and that they’d prefer a son and then a daughter. “It seems very traditional but of course they’ll be happy with two boys or two girls. They don’t want more,” Hay says. “They’ve discussed it endlessly and don’t want to be older parents.”

As Taylor Swift‘s new album, “Red,” tears up the charts, insiders are beginning to decipher exactly which of her failed relationships different songs on it around about — and one source insists to Us Weekly that song “All Too Well” is about Swift’s time dating Jake Gyllenhaal. “It’s safe for her and it’s something she loves,” the source says of Swift’s tendency to mine past relationships for material. “She goes back to it because it’s something she’s good at — and she’s not good at love.”

As an actress and a newly single mom, Katie Holmes has a number of talents, but apparently cooking isn’t one of them. “Me in the kitchen is a comedy, but it’s heartbreaking for me going through it,” she tells Vogue. “But for others, they probably think it’s really funny, because all the pans are out and I get frustrated, and suddenly it’s burning.” We’ll assume someone else is handling the Thanksgiving meal for Holmes this year.

Tara Kimkee Tan is seeking at least $10 million from the posh hotel above the High Line where she was a manager. According to the suit, Tan went into labor late on the night of April 30. She said she labored alone in a guestroom without medical assistance for almost two hours until her daughter was born, as her husband desperately rushed to the hotel while on the phone with their doctor.

“At one point when she called the desk to get help, the response was, ‘This is a joke, right?,’” Tan’s attorney, William Keith Watanabe, told Metro. “After the baby was delivered, Tara was removed from a side entrance because she couldn’t have been taken through the lobby because it would have disrupted the Friday party scene.”  

The suit also alleges Tan was denied maternity leave, despite putting in 80-hour work weeks, a result of the company not having an efficient human resources component, according to Watanabe. Tan also claims she was ridiculed by the general manager for giving birth inside a guestroom.

She was eventually fired in August when company officials told the petite Asian mother of two that she “did not fit the culture,” which the suit describes as one that is young, hip and full of beautiful people. According to her attorney, hotel officials also suspected Tan of taking company property.

“She emptied out her office. After four years of practically living at the hotel, it was baby pictures, diapers, crayons, shoes, and that’s what she removed,” Watanabe said. “What else would she have in her office that was worth taking?”

Watanabe said Thursday the Standard hotel had not yet responded to the suit, but he believed Tan has a “terrific chance” at winning the case.

“I think the complaint speaks for itself,” he said. “Tara is a terrific person, there is no reason this should happen to anyone. She gave her heart and soul to this place.”

The Standard hotel referred Metro to public relations agency Black Frame, which then responded that the Standard is not issuing any comment at this time.

The actress, whose recent argument with her mom led to police intervention, reportedly called the police on dad Michael Lohan, who had turned up at her Beverly Hills home with a group of friends to stage an intervention, according to TMZ. Michael told the Web site that his daughter is in need of treatment and has been surrounding herself with “a bunch of alcoholics and drug addicts.” Police arrived in response to a complaint that Michael and his posse were trespassing, and they soon dispersed.

There’s some new insight into why Katy Perry keeps sticking with on-again, off-again beau John Mayer, according to Us Weekly. Apparently the pop star “believes she can change him,” sources say. “She doesn’t want to be just another one of his conquests.” Her latest strategy — which may explain all the breaking up and making up rumors — is reportedly to play hard-to-get. “She recently told John she was open to see other people,” the source says. “Once Katy turned her back on him, he started chasing her again.”

First Ashton Kutcher replaced Charlie Sheen on “Two and a Half Men,” and now he’s replaced the notorious bad boy at the top of Forbes magazine’s list of highest paid TV actors. Kutcher reportedly earned $24 million between May 2011 and May 2012. Sheen, who held the top spot last year with $40 million, didn’t even make the list this year. In news that may be surprising considering their recent public squabbling, estranged couple Heidi Klum and Seal are actually in an “OK place,” according to Klum. “I don’t know if we’re the greatest friends right now, especially because of the things that he said,” Klum tells Katie Couric during an interview for her new talk show. “We’re in an OK place.” Klum adds that the constant attention hasn’t made processing their breakup any easier: “It’s hard especially when you are in the public eye too. People are always looking at you closely and at everything you do. And they also don’t always see exactly how it really is,” she says. “I haven’t felt like correcting every rumor that is out there. I’m focusing on moving forward.”

“True Blood” stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer became parents twice over this week, according to Hollyscoop. “We can confirm that Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer recently welcomed their twins into the world,” their rep announces. “The babies were born a few weeks early, but are in good health and both Mom and Dad are overjoyed.” The twins mark the first children for Paquin, while Moyer has two children from a previous marriage.

It looks like Randy Jackson won’t be bounced from the judges’ table on “American Idol” after reports leaked that he is close to signing a deal to keep him in his old spot on the hit reality competition show, according to Deadline. Rumors had circulated that Jackson, the only remaining judge from the original version of the show, would be moved to a “mentor” position for the new season. But it looks like that’s not happening.

MTV has announced it will cancel “Jersey Shore” after its sixth season.

As People reports, the first episode of the final season will air Oct. 4 at 10 p.m. on MTV.

The show has chronicled the partying ways of the self-proclaimed “guidos” for six seasons. The cast has shot seasons in Seaside Heights, N.J., Miami, Fla., and Florence, Italy. The final season was shot in Jersey.

Cast member Pauly D starred in his own spinoff called “The Pauly D Project.” Fellow cast members Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Jenni “JWOWW” Farley also launched their own reality show on MTV called “Snooki & JWOWW.”

Over the weekend, Polizzi gave birth to her first child with fiance Jionni LaValle, a son the couple named Lorenzo.

The rest of the current cast includes Michael “The Situation” Sorrentino, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, Samantha Giancola and Deena Nicole Cortese.

MTV will air a special feature called “Gym, Tan, Look Back,” which will recap the previous seasons and include a sneak peak of what’s to come in the sixth and final season.

The 24-year-old Brit took to her website to announce the exciting news to fans.

The couple has been dating since 2011. Konecki, 36, is the co-founder of bottled water company Life Water and also runs the company’s charity Drop4Drop.

Rumors of the couple’s engagement circulated in February after what looked like an engagement ring was spotted on Adele’s left finger. Later in May, she announced on Twitter that the two were not engaged.

According to NBC, the 24-year-old woman was able to call for help using the train’s emergency intercom system at about 2 a.m. aboard the subway.

An MTA supervisor came to the woman’s train car, clearing it and blocking it off, before the woman gave birth.

The new mom and her healthy baby boy were taken off the train at the Chambers Street station and transported to New York Downtown Hospital where they are both reportedly doing fine.

MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota joked at this morning’s board meeting about his baby name suggestion.

“Looking forward to meeting this little baby,” he said. “I want to have something to do with naming him Metro, or something like that.”

The coroner’s finding ends a three-decade fight for justice by Azaria’s parents, Michael Chamberlain and Lindy Chamberlain, who was jailed for three years over her daughter’s death before she was later cleared.

“This has been a terrifying battle, bitter at times, but now some healing, and a chance to put our daughter’s spirit to rest,” Michael Chamberlain told reporters in the Northern Territory capital Darwin after the coroner’s ruling.

Azaria disappeared on August 17, 1980 from a tent in a camping ground near Uluru, a towering, haunting monolith formerly known as Ayers Rock, one of central Australia’s main tourist attractions.

Azaria’s body was never found. Her parents always maintained she was taken by a dingo, an Australian native wild dog.

“Obviously we are relieved and delighted to come to the end of this saga,” Lindy Chamberlain, now known as Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton, told reporters outside the court.

The dingo-baby case has been dramatized several times, and was turned into a Hollywood film “A Cry in the Dark”, starring Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep as Lindy Chamberlain.

TAKEN BY A DINGO

Northern Territory Coroner Elizabeth Morris found evidence from the case proved a dingo or dingoes were responsible for 9-week-old Azaria’s death and ruled that her death certificate should read “attacked and taken by a dingo”.

“What occurred on 17th August, 1980, was that shortly after Mrs Chamberlain placed Azaria in the tent, a dingo or dingoes entered the tent, took Azaria and carried and dragged her from the immediate area,” Morris said.

In an emotional finding, Morris then offered her condolences to the Chamberlains and one of their sons, who were in the Darwin court room.

“Please accept my sincere sympathy on the death of your special loved daughter and sister Azaria. I am so sorry for your loss,” she said to the family. “Time does not remove the pain and sadness of the death of a child.”

A first inquest in 1981 supported the parents’ account but, a second inquest in 1982 overturned that finding and recommended Lindy and Michael Chamberlain stand trial over Azaria’s death.

Lindy Chamberlain, then pregnant with her fourth child, was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Michael Chamberlain was convicted of being an accessory and given a suspended sentence.

A judicial inquiry, known as a Royal Commission, overturned the convictions in 1987, leading to Lindy Chamberlain’s release. A third inquest in 1995 returned an open verdict.

The latest inquest, however, heard new evidence of several dingo attacks on humans, including details of how a nine-year old boy died in Queensland after being attacked in 2001.

Edwards is accused of accepting more than $900,000 in campaign funds from two wealthy donors, knowing the exposure of his extramarital affair “would destroy his presidential campaign,” prosecutors said in a trial brief.

The candidate at the time was a married father of three, whose late wife, Elizabeth, had breast cancer.

Jurors will hear opening statements the federal courthouse in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Edwards, 58, is accused of conspiring to solicit the money, receiving more than the $2,300 allowed from any one donor, and failing to report the payments as contributions.

He faces six felony counts, each carrying a sentence of up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Edwards admits personal failings but insists he broke no laws.

Edwards’ defenders say the government is overreaching with its prosecution of Edwards, the son of mill workers who earned his fortune as a trial lawyer in North Carolina before being elected as a U.S. senator from the state in 1998.

His defense lawyers dispute the Justice Department’s interpretation of federal election laws, arguing the donors would have given the money regardless of the campaign and did so knowing it wouldn’t be used for campaign purposes.

The money was not spent to influence the election but rather to conceal the affair and resulting pregnancy from Edwards’ wife and children, they said.

Edwards never personally received any of the payments, nor did his campaign. The money was used to cover living expenses and medical care for his mistress, campaign videographer Rielle Hunter, rather than traditional campaign activities.

“This is expanding the scope of the definition of campaign contribution,” said Ron Wright, a law professor at Wake Forest University who is not involved in the case. “It is an unprecedented definition.”

PIVOTAL POINTS

The defense is expected to call two former Federal Election Commission members who, if allowed by the judge, would testify they believe Edwards did not violate campaign finance laws.

Hampton Dellinger, a former deputy attorney general who has followed the Edwards case, said the campaign finance experts’ testimony could be pivotal.

The missing pieces of the case also could be significant, he said. Neither of the two donors whose payments are in question are able to testify.

Fred Baron, who served as Edwards’ national campaign finance chairman in 2008, has since died, and heiress Rachel “Bunny” Mellon is 101 and physically unable to attend the trial. Elizabeth Edwards died in 2010.

A chief government witness will be Andrew Young, a campaign aide who later wrote a tell-all book about Edwards’ affair and the efforts to keep it out of the public eye.

Young, who was granted immunity, initially claimed he had fathered a child with Hunter, who is also expected to testify. A lawsuit settlement earlier this year between Young and Hunter called for copies of a videotape purported to show her having sex with Edwards to be destroyed.

Edwards’ defense team, recently reshuffled to include the lawyers who represented Hunter in the civil case, has indicated it will attack Young’s motives and credibility.

Edwards, who also ran for president in 2004 before becoming John Kerry’s vice presidential running mate the same year, has his own credibility issues. He repeatedly denied having an affair and daughter with Hunter, and finally admitted paternity two years after the child’s birth.

“This case is not so much the United States v. John Edwards, it’s Andrew Young v. John Edwards,” Dellinger said. “And I think the jury’s determination about which one of them is more credible may be one of the key factors in deciding whether Mr. Edwards is guilty.”

The trial could last until late May or early June. A conviction would make what qualifies as a campaign contribution less certain for future candidates, said law professor Wright.

“It’s going to mean lots more lawyers employed by campaigns,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot more legal risk involved in election reporting if the government wins this.”

The district attorney’s office confirmed yesterday that they are looking into the Sept. 28 death of the infant, who died at Maimonides Hospital after he reportedly contracted the herpes virus during an ultra-Orthodox Jewish bris.

According to the medical examiner, the baby died of Type 1 herpes virus, which is oral herpes that causes sores around the mouth and lips.

A bris is a Jewish ceremony where a baby boy is circumcised. In an Orthodox tradition that city officials said is uncommon, a rabbi or “mohel” draws blood from the circumcised penis with his mouth. The custom is known as “metzitzah b’peh,” or “suction by mouth.”

The city health department cites herpes as a risk and advises against the ceremony.

The family of the baby who passed away, however, is not cooperating with authorities, according to the Daily News.

This is not the first time a baby has contracted herpes during a circumcision.

In 2004, a baby died after a circumcision, and three cases were connected to one rabbi. The Department of Health commissioner at the time, Thomas Frieden, issued a letter to parents in 2005 warning them of the cases and the risk. 

“There is no reasonable doubt that the practice of metzitzah b’peh has infected several infants in New York City with the herpes virus,” Frieden wrote.

At the time, Frieden said, doctors and others in the Jewish community suggested the department ban the practice, but they instead decided to educate parents with a website focused on the risks.

The virus, while not fatal to adults, can cause babies to become seriously ill, suffer brain damage or die, according to officials with the Department of Health.  
 
Health concerns

The health department advises against metzitzah b’peh and recommends that parents check with their mohel to find out whether they practice it.

The health department documented several cases of herpes infections, one of a baby that died, and another that suffered brain damage.

“Oral herpes spreads easily through saliva, especially when saliva touches a cut or break in the skin, such as during metzitzah b’peh,” the health department says on its website. “Most people with oral herpes don’t know they are infected and don’t have symptoms.”        

Bloomberg expresses concerns

“Religious liberty simply does not extend to injuring others or putting children at risk,” Bloomberg told reporters at an unrelated press conference Tuesday. “So we’ll continue working to prevent more baby boys from suffering these tragic fates.” 

Previous problems

As far back as 1998, the city investigated two cases of herpes, both associated with a mohel who performed the practice.

In 2004, a baby died after a circumcision that was performed by a Rockland County rabbi, and three more cases were connected to another rabbi.

Could Snooki have a case of GTB (gym, tan, baby time) on her hands? Rumor has it, the feisty self-proclaimed guidette could be pregnant.

Star magazine reports Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, 24, is expecting her first child with equally tan boyfriend Jianni LaValle. The tabloid claims Snooki is only telling her closest friends and family about the pregnancy.

Typically an over-sharer, Snooki has yet to address the rumor on her frequently updated Twitter account. She did, however, post some comments that may be an indicator that the “Jersey Shore” starlet has the situation of situations on her hand.

“I feel sick,” she said on her Facebook account on January 25.

Later, she tweeted, “Late night craving…yogurt hits the fricken spot!”

Although Snooki has been heard more than once commenting about her desire to have Jianni’s babies, something tells us this pregnancy was likely accidental. She is set to co-star with fellow Jersey girl JWOWW in a spin-off show.  

A source tells Star, “They are having to redo the creative direction of her spin-off because of her pregnancy.”

But the possible pregnancy isn’t the only bump that show producers are encountering. MTV and 459 was recently banned from filming the reality series in Hoboken, due to Mayor Dawn Zimmer’s “public safety” and “quality of life” concerns.

The State Health Department launched an investigation after Beyonce and Jay-Z were rumored to have preferential treatment and VIP access around the hospital, interfering with the stays of other new parents. However, the probe was quickly closed after the Health Department found that Lenox Hill had committed no wrongdoing.

The couple reportedly spent $1.3 million in renovations and security measures for a birthing suit that took up an entire floor of Lenox Hill. Hospital officials deny the couple shelled out that much, but TMZ has obtained photos of Beyonce’s luxury hospital room — and it looks more like a suite at Four Seasons.

The actress and boyfriend Tom Sturridge are ready to get married and have a family, though which they’ll do first isn’t clear. Miller recently confirmed she’s expecting her first child in June, and now word comes that Sturridge popped the question during a recent vacation to Paris, according to Life & Style. “They’re engaged and really happy. Her family is happy, as they absolutely adore Tom,” a source says. “He filled their hotel suite at the Ritz with flowers and presented her with a vintage Victorian ring.”

This will be the second child for Kourtney, 32, and long-time boyfriend/party animal Scott Disick, 28. Their first child, Mason, is now almost 2 years old.

Kourtney told Us Weekly she is about nine weeks along and took a pregnancy test about five weeks ago.

“You’re supposed to wait 12 weeks to tell people, but I feel confident,” she said.

Though this will be the couple’s second child together, don’t expect a wedding in their future. Kourtney has been extremely vocal about her absolute lack of desire to tie the knot with Scott.

During her first labor, Kourtney famously pulled her first baby out of her womb with her own two hands. Since that birth, she has also tasted her own breast milk (according to sister Khloe) and gotten an oil enema on national television.

The suit was quietly dismissed late last week.  What’s more, Mariah Yeater’s lawyers, Lance Rogers and Matt Pare, have quit her [and] withdrawn from the case.

As we first reported, Justin not only planned to take a DNA test when he returned to the U.S., he was going to sue Yeater and her lawyers for making a bogus claim.  And, as we reported, Justin’s lawyer, Howard Weitzman, called the attorneys and informed them a suit was looming.

We’re not sure how Beiber is feeling right now, but we’re guessing it’s something like this:

(again, gross), according to TMZ and nine months later gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.

Bieber’s legal team is steadfast against the allegations. His rep said, “While we haven’t yet seen the lawsuit, it’s sad that someone would fabricate malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false claims.”

The rep also added that they will do everything they can legally to protect Justin against this Baby Biebs nightmare. Come on, the kid has enough to deal with, like, you know, launching a fragrance … and puberty!

We are happy to witness Bieber’s first “Billie Jean” moment, though. Get used to it, Justin — there will be plenty more.
