A 14-year-old girl was killed by an unknown gunman Saturday night as she rode an M.T.A. bus in Queens, police said.

Daja Robinson had just boarded the Q6 bus at Sutphin Blvd. and Rockaway Blvd. on her way home from a friend's Sweet 16 party when gunfire erupted outside. One of the bullets passed through the window and struck her in the head.

Robinson was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where she was pronounced dead just after 9 p.m.

Two teenage female friends of the victim were on the bus with her at the time of the shooting. They told investigators they had left a birthday party at the nearby Onyx Lounge prior to boarding the Q6 and that there had been no disputes or arguments that might have led to violence.

Nine .40-cal shells were recovered outside of the bus, which was shot several times, police said.

No arrests have been made.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority, the agency New Yorkers love to hate, is tugging your heartstrings this Earth Day with a series of adorable videos featuring children thanking you for riding mass transit.

There are individual videos for the subway, the bus system, the Long Island Railroad, and Metro-North.

The wise young ones note your likely reasons for opting to ride with the masses, citing the time and money saved and traffic avoided.

Occasionally they come up with a more specific reason.

"You did it because it's fun to look out the window," says one boy matter-of-factly in the bus video.

A triad of tiny scientists hold up wonky carbon dioxide models, informing the viewer of the 20 pounds of greenhouse gases the environment is being spared.

Ultimately, they all sweetly acknowledge your sacrifice for them (in the form of not burning up the planet they're stuck living on longer than you will be).

"You did it for me," a bow-tied young'un nods seriously.

According to the MTA, the longer the trip and the more congestion one would encounter by driving, the more greenhouse gas emissions are saved. So you can ride the train feeling smug about all the traffic you're not sitting in for more reasons than one!

A second Chinatown bus company was shut down Friday after federal investigators discovered numerous safety violations that they claimed posed an "imminently hazardous and potentially deadly situation."

Ming An Inc., which operated buses from New York to about two dozen southern cities, hired drivers without a commercial license, failed to test its drivers for drugs and alcohol, and did not require its drivers to keep log books or conduct safety inspections, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The company's drivers also frequently received speeding tickets.

The federal Department of Transportation has ordered the Fung Wah bus company to shut down immediately, one day after state officials said they were requesting the feds to declare the company an "imminent hazard" over safety concerns.

The DOT's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration made the decision today, according to a statement from the agency. [related tag=”boston” limit=5]

The statement said that the agency has "ordered Fung Wah Bus Transportation, Inc., to immediately cease passenger service and provide its entire fleet of 28 motorcoaches for thorough and detailed safety inspections by qualified inspectors."

The agency said it is continuing an examination of the discount bus company's operations, including its vehicle safety records, driver safety performance and other records.

Additional actions against the company may be warranted, the agency said.

Ann Berwick, chair of the state Department of Public Utilities, said Monday that the agency’s Transportation Oversight Division conducted random inspections earlier this month and of nine Fung Wah buses looked at, eight had cracks in their frames. Those buses were ordered off of the road.

State officials met with the bus company’s owner who agreed to take all buses manufactured before 2005 off of the road. As of Saturday, 21 of 28 buses were taken out of service.

Calls placed Monday to the bus company's Boston and New York City offices requesting comment were not returned.

The federal Department of Transportation has ordered the Fung Wah bus company to shut down immediately, one day after state officials said they were requesting the feds to declare the company an “imminent hazard” over safety concerns.

The DOT’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration made the decision today, according to a statement from the agency. <fieldset class="related"><legend align="center">Related Articles</legend>

Indictment for head of Beacon Hill church

Boston's innovation center close to opening

Memorial Day Flag Garden to be planted in Boston Common

Crowded field remains in Boston mayor's race

British trio organizes 'One Run' across the U.S. to raise money for Boston's One Fund

</fieldset>

The statement said that the agency has “ordered Fung Wah Bus Transportation, Inc., to immediately cease passenger service and provide its entire fleet of 28 motorcoaches for thorough and detailed safety inspections by qualified inspectors.”

The agency said it is continuing an examination of the discount bus company’s operations, including its vehicle safety records, driver safety performance and other records.

Calls placed Monday to the bus company’s Boston and New York City offices requesting comment were not returned.
