As in real life, Will and Jaden Smith are father and son in “After Earth,” the new film by M. Night Shyamalan. Real-life parents and kids acting together in movies is a tradition nearly as old as the medium itself. Below we look at other such on-screen unions, some of which didn’t work out as swimmingly as in actual life.

Joe and Buster Keaton
Film: ”Sherlock, Jr.” (1924)
Ages: 58 and 29
Roles: Buster is a lowly movie projectionist who one day wills himself into the detective film he’s screening. Joe plays the father of “The Girl.”
Result: Joe and his wife Myra were vaudeville legends who started using Buster in their act when he was only a few years old. Buster’s shtick involved being thrown about the stage. Buster later repaid the favor by giving his father, by then an alkie, bit parts in his masterpieces.

Ozzie, Harriet, David and Ricky Nelson
Film: ”Here Come the Nelsons” (1952)
Ages: 46, 43, 16 and 12
Roles: They played “themselves” in a movie that doubled as the pilot for the long-running family sitcom “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,” which had already existed as a radio show.
Result: The Nelsons epitomized the conservative nuclear family up until the 1960s, when times changed, man. Ricky became a breakout teen idol, and even wasn’t terrible in the second greatest Western ever, “Rio Bravo.” Ozzie and Harriet’s legacy lived on in the early ‘90s pop-rock hair-outfit Nelson.

John and Patrick Wayne
Film: ”The Searchers” (1956)
Ages: 49 and 17
Roles: John plays Ethan Edwards, an obsessive racist who spends years tracking down his niece (Natalie Wood) who’s been taken by injuns. Patrick has a small role as a nervous Yankee soldier who finally tells them where she is.
Result: The Duke’s second son, Patrick acted in nine of his father’s movies, first as a kid in bit parts, then in larger roles, including being fifth-billed in “The Alamo.” He never quite came into his own, but he did star in the Ray Harryhausen classic “Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger,” which may have been why he was screentested for Superman.

John and Hayley Mills
Film: ”Tiger Bay” (1959)
Ages: 51 and 13
Roles: John is a superintendent trying to solve a young woman’s murder. Hayley plays a 12-year-old tomboy who witnessed the crime yet is trying to keep the suspect from being got.
Result: John was a popular actor — best known today for either “Ryan’s Daughter” or “The Swiss Family Robinson” — who thought his young daughter, Hayley, might have a knack for the screen. He was right, and she terrorized Disney films for years. They acted again a few more times, including in the teen sailing adventure “The Truth About Spring.” John also acted a few times with his other actress daughter, Juliet, who won an Emmy for “QB VII” and had sex with Jack Lemmon in “Avanti!”

Bette Davis and Barbara Merrill
Film: ”Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?” (1962)
Ages: 54 and 15
Roles: Davis is a former vaudeville child star and failed movie star bitter of her sister’s (Joan Crawford)’s former success. Merrill plays the daughter of the next door neighbors.
Result: Merrill did not get along with her mother, and put her anecdotes — or her version of them — into two separate tell-all books, just as happened with Crawford and her adopted daughter Christina. Unlike Christina, Merrill wrote them when Davis was still alive, allowing her the chance to refute her trashy accusations.

Melvin and Mario Van Peebles
Film: ”Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song” (1971)
Ages: 39 and 14
Roles: Melvin plays an entertainer at a brothel falsely accused by The Man. Mario plays his younger self in a fairly graphic scene where he loses his virginity to a prostitute. Thanks, dad!
Result: Even though what was shot very nearly qualifies as child pornography, it wasn’t traumatic. Mario grew up idolizing and often working with his father. He became a filmmaker himself, making “New Jack City” and “Baadassss!,” an account of the making of his father’s pioneering black cinema landmark, starring Mario as his wildly charismatic pop.

Tatum and Ryan O’Neal both did career peak work in Peter Bogdanovich’s “Paper Moon.”

Ryan and Tatum O’Neal
Film: ”Paper Moon” (1973)
Ages: 32 and 10
Roles: Ryan is a con man in the Depression-era South who collects fraudulent fees for Bibles. Tatum plays a grifting prodigy who may be his daughter.
Result: Ryan, often a wooden rent-a-hunk, was atypically alive and hilarious. Ditto, for that matter, Tatum, who became the youngest-ever Oscar winner for her spirited turn. This might be the doing of director Peter Bogdanovich, whose reign as Hollywood’s golden boy ended right after this, his third straight monster hit. Ryan did two more films of major note (“Barry Lyndon” and “The Driver”), but soon returned to performances of low wattage in films of questionable pedigree. Tatum did “The Bad News Bears” but struggled through an adult career. Tatum reported that Ryan hit on her at Farah Fawcett’s funeral.

Henry and Jane Fonda
Film: ”On Golden Pond” (1981)
Ages: 76 and 44
Roles: Henry is a crotchety, terminally sweary old-timer who is estranged from his daughter, played by Jane. This isn’t that far from the truth.
Result: The two were famously estranged, despite him being, like her, a liberal, back when such a thing wasn’t cool. The film helped them patch things up, just as happens in the film. Henry died soon after winning his first Oscar, which Jane accepted on his behalf.

Clint and Kyle Eastwood
Film: ”Honkytonk Man” (1982)
Ages: 52 and 14
Roles: Clint plays a never-been western singer circa the Depression heading for his big break at the Grand Ole Opry. Kyle plays his nephew, along for the ride.
Result: Kyle had uncredited bit roles in “The Outlaw Josey Wales” and “Bronco Billy,” but didn’t really pursue acting after this, one of his dad’s lower-key, lesser-seen works. His father had a bigger impression with his other passion: music. Kyle became a jazz guitarist whose music, and his bands, have appeared in many subsequent Eastwoods.

Martin and Charlie Sheen played a disapproving father and his loutish son in “Wall Street.”

Charlie and Martin Sheen
Film: ”Wall Street” (1987)
Ages: 47 and 22
Roles: Charlie is an upstart who gets associated with the wrong scene, while his father scowls. They also acted in this movie together.
Result: The two would reunite, for about 10 seconds, in “Hot Shots Part Deux,” in a scene that parodies “Apocalypse Now”: passing by each other on ships, they simultaneously stand and proclaim, “Loved you in ‘Wall Street!’”

Sylvester and Sage Stallone
Film: ”Rocky V” (1990)
Ages: 44 and 14
Roles: Sly is a slow mumblemouth who solved the Cold War, but is still stuck penniless in a miserable South Philly neighborhood because his brother-in-law Paulie is an idiot. Sage is his resentful son who gets an earring.
Result: Sage took over the role of Rocky Jr. from someone actually named Rocky Krakoff. He didn’t get great reviews, but neither did the film. Still, he acted again with his dad in “Daylight,” and appears in Vincent Gallo’s “Promises Written in Water,” which Gallo won’t let anyone see. Last year, Sage died of a heart attack at 36 years old.

Kirk, Michael and Cameron Douglas
Film: ”It Runs in the Family” (2003)
Ages: 87, 58 and 24
Roles: Kirk is a grandfather who has suffered a stroke, Michael is his lawyer son who works too damn much and Cameron is Michael’s rebellious son.
Result: Everyone hated this movie. Cameron has since had drug felonies and is currently serving a sentence that will end in 2018. Kirk, however, is a robust 96.

Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie
Film: ”Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” (2001)
Ages: 63 and 26
Roles: Jolie is a buxom archaeologist who does all the things that Indiana Jones can’t, like have breasts. Voight is her dead father who she meets in an alternate dimension.
Result: As a child, Jolie made her debut with her father in the 1982 gambling comedy “Lookin’ to Get Out.” They had a bumpy relationship, due to his marital infidelity, but managed to patch things up as her career blew up. Then Voight went kind of crazy. Their relationship again deteriorated, only to come together again after her mother’s death. Still, Voight found out about her double mastectomy with everyone else.

Will and Jaden Smith
Film: ”After Earth” (2013)
Ages: 44 and 14
Roles: Will is Cypher Raige (this is his actual name), a general in the deep future who tries to survive on a dangerous post-apocalyptic Earth alongside his rebellious son, played by Jaden (who is not rebellious).
Result: Jaden is the luckiest kid in the world, whose father bought him “The Karate Kid.” But their films together aren’t pretty: “The Pursuit of Happyness,” made when Jaden was 8, found them pursuing the American Dream while spending nights on the street or in dodgy shelters.

At least Charlie Sheen isn’t worried about Lindsay Lohan‘s legal troubles. “She’s terrific,” he tells Jay Leno in an interview. “I mean she’s going through a lot of stuff, but she’s smart and super-talented and will come out on top eventually, you know.” As for the $100,000 Sheen loaned the troubled actress — money she reportedly put toward her massive tax bill — Sheen says, “I didn’t know it was for taxes. If I had known that, I’d have given her half, you know.”

John Mayer is definitely mellowing when it comes to dealing with paparazzi. “The way that the media plays a part in everyone’s life has changed over the last several years,” he tells RollingStone.com. “I mean, I used to be incredibly put off by somebody taking a picture, thinking as if in some way it was it was invading my brain. But all it is is you can see where I was last weekend. That’s all. And I think time has shown that nothing will be stolen from you. It’s just a photograph of you and your dumb scarf that you put on because it wouldn’t fit in your suitcase. Cool.”

Oscar-nominee Jennifer Lawrence recently told Metro that her “Silver Linings Playbook” co-star Bradley Cooper had taught her that she can’t go to the grocery store anymore now that she’s famous. ” It’s fine, I can get friends to get my groceries,” she said last month. But apparently Lawrence thought the height of awards season was a good time to try again, as she was spotted this week at a Los Angeles supermarket, buying groceries incognito under a large purple hat and a massive scarf, according to photo agency X-17.

Steven Soderbergh might be retiring from directing, but that doesn’t mean a sequel to last year’s “Magic Mike” isn’t on the way — at least according to Matthew McConaughey, who played the leader of a team of male strippers in the film. “I know it’s something that’s legitimately brewing,” McConaughey tells MTV News. “In the right way [I would come back. It would be so much fun, but I would only be able to revisit [my character] Dallas if I really go, ‘OK, that’s what he would be doing.’ I’d have to keep him the same tone.”

Charlie Sheen showed signs of life today on his Twitter account, which has more than 4 million followers, to let everyone know his father will be guest starring this Thursday on his show “Anger Management” — and, of course, we should all tune in.

“It’s on! My pop guest stars Thursday on Anger Management. Watch my dad show up as my dad 9:30p on FX. Best yet!!” Sheen tweeted. He attached a photo of himself with his dad, Martin Sheen. The two are yukking it up over a couple of beers.

Sheen hasn’t tweeted since July 13 when he told followers, “reach for the stars everyone. dogspeed cadre. c out.”

The cryptic message mystified fans who eventually interpreted the tweet as Sheen’s resignation from Twitter. The Twittersphere rejoiced at his re-entry today.

“Charlie!!!! We love you here in Greece!!!” one fan tweeted.

“omg your back on! Watched Anger Management yest & was great!!” another said.

But if Sheen wants to keep his reputation as a High Priest Vatican Assassin Warlock, he’s going to have to tweet better than this.

Since Justin Theroux broke up with his girlfriend of 14 years shortly before getting together with Jennifer Aniston, the former “Friends” star has been dodging claims that she’s a home-wrecker, but Aniston insists she and Theroux — who met while filming “Wanderlust” — didn’t get together until later. “Nothing happened on that movie,” she tells GQ magazine. “It’s a rumor — it’s the easy rumor, but nothing happened. We were just friends.” Speaking of rumors, Aniston continues to use her current press tour to clear up a few stories floating around about her. “I’m not having triplets. Not having twins. Nor am I having one baby. I did not elope,” she tells the magazine. “The one time I do say, ‘Yes! I’m pregnant!’ they’ll be like, ‘Pfft. Right.’”

Tim Tebow insists that he and Katy Perry are not dating — much to the dismay of Perry’s mother. “No, there’s not” any truth to the hookup rumors, Tebow tells Hollyscoop. “I’m just having fun and enjoying my life, trying to enjoy every moment and not get too caught up in any of the hype.”

Victoria Beckham is striking back at critics who have said she’s been looking miserable lately. “Look, if people want to say I’m miserable then so be it,” Beckham tells the Sunday Mirror, explaining that she’s just exhausted from the combination of having new baby girl Harper to care for and a fashion line to oversee. “And then people want to say I look crap. Well, I’m a working mum, so give me a break. I’d like there to be a break but I very much doubt it’s going to happen any time soon. When Harper sleeps that will be my break.”

After keeping mum for three years, Minnie Driver has revealed the identity of the father of her son, Henry, saying it was a writer on “the Riches,” her former TV series. “He’s not famous,” Driver tells the Observer — without actually naming the man. “I don’t need to protect him anymore. He can fend for himself. He’s a grownup. We weren’t together and he wasn’t directly in the business so I chose to protect him and not have a rain of publicity.” As for how things are now between Driver and Henry’s father? “Is he a good dad? Sort of. He’s figuring it out,” she says. “I mean, he hasn’t been that involved — his choice. But he is now.”

Charlie Sheen clearly had second thoughts about his recent harsh words about Ashton Kutcher and the new season of “Two and a Half Men,” as he’s issued an apology to his sitcom replacement — via TMZ, of course. “Dear Ashton. My bad. I was disrespectful to a man doing his best,” Sheen writes. “I got excited and threw you into the crossfire, but the rest of my statement I stand behind. You however, deserve better. Safety in your travels sir.” The part of his previous tirade that he’s not apologizing for? “I’m tired of pretending the show doesn’t suck,” he said, adding that Kutcher is “saddled with bad writing.”

In the new series, Sheen will play an anger management counselor whose antics are buffered by the women around him — his 13-year-old daughter, ex-wife and best friend/mentor. John Landgraf, president and general manager of FX Networks, called this the kind of role “Charlie ought to be playing at this point, in the sense that he is a character who has a checkered past, but is pretty self-aware, and is struggling in a very honest way with that checkered past and a desire to do more positive things in his life.”

Landgraf insisted that adding the series to the FX lineup isn’t a “cynical publicity stunt.” He picked up the comedy — based on the 2003 movie — due to the “really excellent pitch” Sheen and the series’ showrunner, Bruce Helford, presented. It was so good, in fact, the network has given the “Anger Management” team unusual creative license — no pilot was shot, nor has FX even seen a script. “We’re a network that likes to take risks,” Landgraf reminded reporters.

It’s a gamble the network is willing to take, he says, because he “believes in redemption.”

“If Charlie wants to get his house in order — and that encompasses his issues with substance abuse and his relationships to his own family, and it also encompasses his desire to have greater consciousness about his public persona — and he wants to do a show in which he as an actor has more complicatedly positive relationships with women, my opinion is that [it] could be a really good thing,” Landgraf said.

Here’s the good news: Not only did Lindsay show up at the morgue, but she was sociable and cleaned floors on her hands and knees, reports TMZ. And although the L.A. county coroner rejected her peace offering (and/or bribe) of cupcakes and burgers, we thought the delivery was a nice gesture.

Now, for the bad news: Dina Lohan is reportedly shopping around a tell-all book about her daughter’s struggles with addiction, and father Michael Lohan gladly took the opportunity to complain about them both in a lengthy, unhinged rant to RadarOnline, in which he compared himself to an archangel.

In other words? This chick is going to be headlining every gossip column for the next 20 years, and we collectively owe her apology cupcakes.

But they were on a break!

The Black Eyed Peas aren’t calling it quits as some rumors suggested, but Fergie does admit the group is on hiatus. “A break is not a breakup — you gotta watch ‘Friends,’” the Queen Pea told TMZ cameras.

We somehow doubt will.i.am is well-versed in the Ross and Rachel saga, so we’ll spell it out for him: It’s a trap, and we bet Fergie would look behind that door.

Sheen: ‘People aren’t stupid’

The more Ashton Kutcher denies cheating on wife Demi Moore in rambling Web videos, the more sane and professional Charlie Sheen seems. Sheen says he has no hard feelings about Kutcher, who replaced him on “Two and a Half Men,” but he’s not surprised ratings for the show have gone down. “He’s doing the best he can. I don’t think the role is cursed, but I’m extremely disappointed with how they’re handling what I left behind,” Sheen tells TMZ. “People aren’t stupid, you know. Not all of them.”

But that is just a drop in the bucket for the television show, which proved on Monday night that they’ll be just fine without Sheen. A record 27.7 million viewers tuned in to Monday’s premiere of “Two and a Half Men” to watch the cast “bury” womanizing bachelor Charlie Harper and introduce new star Ashton Kutcher. Even TV juggernaut “Dancing with the Stars” on rival ABC couldn’t compete with those numbers; they “only” had 18.6 million tuning in to see the competition’s first transgender contestant Chaz Bono do the cha-cha-cha.

So, basically, the takeaway from this is that “Two and a Half Men” can do no wrong — even kill of one of its most popular characters. If I were a cast member on “Glee” (cough, Lea Michele, cough), I’d be a little afraid right now.

Hug it out, the movie

There’s been speculation about an eventual “Entourage” movie now that the HBO series has ended, and executive producer Mark Wahlberg is happy to confirm it. “Yes, for sure. Yes,” he tells Hollyscoop when asked if the jump to the big screen is taking place. Wahlberg says that all the events of the series finale leave the characters “teed up for a movie.” There’s no word on when the film would go into production at this time.

Three months after their divorce was finalized, Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller are reportedly “thinking of getting back together,” a source tells Us Weekly. The pair were spotted over the weekend boarding a private jet together to Mexico and smiling. “She’s totally gung-ho,” the source says. “He just wants his kids to be happy, and if that means they need to be a family, then he is up for it. The kids have suffered a lot, and he feels so guilty lately.”

Brad Pitt’s fish tale

Brad Pitt isn’t letting long shooting days on “World War Z” keep him from enjoying being in Scotland. The actor reportedly took his sons out for a bit of fishing recently on the grounds of their lavish rented estate, according to Us Weekly. “Brad looked very proud of the boys, despite the fact that no one managed to catch anything,” a source says. “I don’t think Brad particularly cared about getting a bite.”

The lady for Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe’s mystery girlfriend has been identified as Rosanne Coker, a production assistant who worked on the last three “Harry Potter” films as well as Radcliffe’s upcoming “The Woman in Black,” according to the Daily Mail. “They would really prefer to keep things quiet,” her father, Malcolm Coker, tells the newspaper. “But they have been going out for just over a year now. I have met Daniel and he is a lovely guy.”

Kim Stewart is a mom

Kimberly Stewart gave birth to a baby girl Sunday in Los Angeles, according to Us Weekly. While the baby’s father, Oscar-winner Benicio del Toro, was not present at the hospital, new grandfather Rod Stewart was. “Benicio is the father and very supportive,” del Toro’s rep said earlier this year. “Although [he and Kimberly] are not a couple, they are looking forward to the arrival of the baby.”

Leonardo DiCaprio’s European tour with rumored girlfriend Blake Lively continues, though the pair are doing their best to not be seen together. After a trip to Italy, DiCaprio and Lively returned to France, where they were twice spotted leaving the Saint-Paul de Vence hotel in Saint-Paul separately, according to Us Weekly. The next day, they returned to Cannes, where they were first spotted together two weeks ago, and boarded a yacht. “Blake is definitely being wooed,” a source says.

Sheen’s home up for sale

Just days after Charlie Sheen announced he is selling his infamous Los Angeles mansion — which he dubbed “Sober Valley Ranch” during his in-home rehab earlier this year — he already has an offer. The home is listed at $7.2 million, but adult entertainment company YouPorn is reportedly offering $4.5 million in cash, according to TMZ. There’s more to the offer, though, as the company wants to move several of Sheen’s favorite porn stars into the 5-bedroom, 7-bathroom estate and offer him 24-hour-a-day access.

Cheryl Cole cashes in

While Cheryl Cole won’t be making the jump to the U.S. “X Factor” after all, she won’t go back to England empty-handed, as the axed judge will reportedly still take home her full salary for the season, according to The Sun. Cole, who was dropped from the show four days into rehearsal, will take home nearly $2 million, sources say. Hopefully the payout will help ease some of the guilt Simon Cowell is reportedly feeling over the sudden change. “He loves Cheryl and did everything in his power to get her on U.S. TV,” a source says.

If Maria Shriver decides to divorce Arnold Schwarzenegger after revelations of his fathering a child with a former household employee triggered the couple’s separation, it could prove to be one of the costliest settlements in recent history, trumping even Tiger Woods’ $110 million payout, according to Page Six. Given the former California governor’s estimated worth, Shriver could walk away with more than $200 million, despite a prenup sources believe the couple signed. Neither Shriver nor Schwarzenegger have filed for divorce yet.

Kutcher won’t get comfy

While executives at “Two and a Half Men” are happy to have Ashton Kutcher stepping into Charlie Sheen’s shoes, they apparently don’t expect to keep him long. According to the Wall Street Journal, Kutcher’s contract for the hit sitcom only covers one year, while the show itself was renewed for two more seasons. Kutcher will be earning an estimated $750,000 an episode, according to the newspaper. 

How do you really feel, Zach?

In other “Mad Men” news, Zach Galifianakis is no January Jones fan. It seems they met once, and didn’t quite hit it off: “It was crazy,” the actor tells Shortlist.com. “I was at a party, I’d never met her — and she was like, ‘Come sit down.’ So I sit at her table and talk for 10 minutes, and she goes, ‘I think it’s time for you to leave now.’” More and more, we know where her frosty Betty Draper inspiration comes from.

Sheen vs. Kutcher

Charlie Sheen isn’t too thrilled by the news that Ashton Kutcher will be replacing him on “Two and a Half Men,” and he’s made his feelings known in a profanity-laced letter to TMZ. “My fans may tune in for a minute — but at the end of the day, no one cares about your feeble show without me,” Sheen writes. “Shame on you. Not even a phone call to the man that put you on the map. The man that put $500 million in your pockets.” As for Kutcher himself, Sheen has a special message: “Enjoy planet Chuck, Ashton,” Sheen says in reference to series creator Chuck Lorre. “There is no air, laughter, loyalty or love there.”

As long as Kutcher primarily performs with his shirt off, I think most people will forget all about Charlie Sheen by next season.

"After careful consideration, Warner Bros. Television has terminated Charlie Sheen’s services on ‘Two and a Half Men’ effective immediately," according to the statement, TheWrap.com reported.

According to a report on Variety.com, the studio sent the actor a letter informing him of the termination. Sheen had another season to go on his contract with the studio for the CBS comedy, which was shut down for the rest of this season by the studio and network on Feb. 24 because of Sheen’s increasingly erratic behavior and hard-partying lifestyle.

Reps for the studio told Variety that said no final decision has been made about the fate of "Two and a Half Men" on CBS next season, other than the fact that Sheen will not be on the series.

Not one to be discouraged, however, Sheen today announced on Twitter that he is looking for an intern. The listing — run through Internships.com, which has a sponsorship deal with the actor — asks for a ‘#tigerbloodintern’ to help ‘#teamsheen’ continue ‘#winning.’ So, ambitious aspiring social media professionals, here’s your chance to hop on and ride the Sheen wave — at least for a while, before you inevitably quit due to the unique pressure caused by having a crazy person as your boss.
