Jodie Foster, who received the Cecil B. Demille Award for her 47-year-long career in Hollywood, offered an acceptance speech that has left audiences and critics baffled, outraged and inspired in equal measure. Foster addressed her sexuality more openly than she ever has — without actually saying she’s a lesbian — while also taking the press at large to task for continuing to bring up the issue.

“I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago in the stone age,” Foster said. “If you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, you might value privacy.”

The overall message was unclear. Was she officially coming out? Did she announce her retirement from acting and directing? What does she have against Honey Boo Boo? It didn’t help matters that the audio cut out at a crucial moment as she discussed “a big coming out speech.” So what did the six-and-a-half-minute ramble actually mean?

We set out to decode it:

“I guess I have a sudden urge to say something that I’ve never really been able to air in public. So, a declaration that I’m a little nervous about but maybe not quite as nervous as my publicist right now, huh Jennifer? But I’m just going to put it out there, right? Loud and proud, right? So I’m going to need your support on this. I am single. Yes I am, I am single. No, I’m kidding, but I’m not really kidding.”

The “Homeland” actress also scored major points on the red carpet for her post pregnancy body — and her pitch-perfect hair and makeup.

Danes’ red Versace gown inspired stylist Peter Butler to give the new mom a “modern Jessica Rabbit” ‘do.

To start, Butler blew out her hair with a large, round, boar-bristle brush. Next, he curled her locks section by section using a curling iron with a 1 1/2 inch barrel.

To set the curls, he sprayed Danes’ hair with Frizz-Ease Moisture Barrier Firm-Hold Hairspray. To achieve the waves, Butler brushed through the curls with a paddle brush before applying Frizz-Ease Secret Weapon Flawless Finishing Creme for shine and hold.

All you need now is a hot red dress.

All of Hollywood was focused on the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards Sunday night as awards season kicked into high gear with the Hollywood Foreign Press’ yearly party at the Beverly Hilton.

While the TV industry enjoyed the limelight as well, the real question is how do the night’s movie winners will impact the ongoing Oscar race. Wins for Daniel Day-Lewis for “Lincoln” (Best Actor in a Drama), Jessica Chastain for “Zero Dark Thirty” (Best Actress in a Drama), Michael Hanake for “Amour” (Best Foreign Language Film) and Anne Hathaway for “Les Miserables” (Best Supporting Actress) certainly help their chances at next month’s Academy Awards.

But Ben Affleck, who won for directing “Argo,” will have to be happy with the Golden Globe, as he was infamously shut out of the Oscar nominations for Best Director. But it’s win for Best Picture — Drama could help it’s win in the tight, nine-way Best Picture race at the Oscars.

Jodie Foster, who received the Cecil B. Demille Award for her long career in Hollywood, used her acceptance speech to stun audiences by addressing her sexuality more openly than she ever has — without actually saying she’s a lesbian — while also taking the press at large for task for continuing to bring up the issue.

“I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago in the stone age,” Foster said. “If you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, you might value privacy. I have given everything up there from the time that I was 3 years old.”

This year’s new co-hosts, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, drew early raves for their work, with a lively opening segment that poked just enough fun at the attendees to make it memorable.

“Only at the Golden Globes do the beautiful people of film rub shoulders with the rat-faced people of television,” joked Amy Poehler, who is nominated up against Fey for Best Actress in a Television Comedy. “I hope I win,” Poehler told Fey.

The ladies also took a moment to poke fun at Ricky Gervais, who hosted the three previous years and drew increasing criticism each time for jokes that some felt crossed the line into meanness.

“Ricky Gervais could not be here tonight because he’s no longer in show business,” Fey joked. Fey and Poehler also noted they’d been warned the punishment for going to far was being asked back to host the next year.

The Hollywood Foreign Press made sure to spread the love around, celebrating “Les Miserables,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “Argo” and “Django Unchained,” with no clear favorite film. Quentin Tarantino took home Best Screenplay while Christoph Waltz earned Best Supporting Actor , beating out co-star Leonardo DiCaprio as well as “Lincoln” scene-stealer Tommy Lee Jones, who is considered the Oscar front-runner in the category.

And Adele received her first Golden Globe for Best Song for “Skyfall.” “Oh my God! Honestly, I’ve come out for a night” as a new mom, Adele said in an endearing acceptance speech. “I was literally not expecting this.”

On the TV side of things, most awards mirrored last September’s Emmy awards. Maggie Smith won for Best Supporting Actress for “Downton Abbey,” and “Homeland” stars Damien Lewis and Clair Danes earned the trophy for Best Actor and Actress in a TV Drama. “Homeland” also won for Best TV Drama. HBO’s “Game Change,” about Sarah Palin’s introduction into the 2008 presidential race, won big, taking home Best TV Movie, Best Supporting Actor for Ed Harris and Best Actress for Julianne Moore’s depiction of Palin.

There were a few shockers, though, like Don Cheadle’s win for Best Actor in a Comedy for “House of Lies,” beating out Jim Parsons, Alec Baldwin, Louis C.K. and previous winner Matt LeBlanc, and first-time nominee Lena Dunham’s win for Best Actress for “Girls.” And the frank freshman HBO series also took home Best Comedy Series on the same night as it’s second season U.S. premiere

Best actress nominee Charlize Theron didn’t just wow us at the Golden Globes with her gorgeous pink Dior gown; we were equally smitten by the romantic updo stylist Enzo Angileri created for her.

It started Sunday night at the Golden Globes, when both of the icons were nominated against one another in the category of Best Original Song. Madonna was nominated for “Masterpiece” in “W.E.” while Elton was tapped for “Hello Hello” from “Gnomeo & Juliet.”

When asked by Carson Daly on the red carpet about the chances of Madonna winning, EJ quipped: “Madonna doesn’t have a f—ing chance.”

Then, when Madonna actually won, Elton’s partner, David Furnish, went onto Facebook to vent his frustration. “Madonna. Best song???? F—off!!!” Not satisfied, he continued his rant: “Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit. Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in its narcissism,” he wrote.

Madonna won’t fight dirty though, and backstage she was the definition of polite.

“I hope he speaks to me for the next couple of years,” she said about John. “He’s been known to get mad at me so I don’t know. He’s brilliant and I adore him so he’ll win another award. I don’t feel bad!”

Way to take the high road, Madge. You could have easily just pointed out that the man known for such classics as “Candle in the Wind” and “Rocket Man” was this year hoping to win an award for a movie called “Gnomeo & Juliet.”

I know you I've called your looks boring in years past but you really shut me up this year, Jessica Biel. Congrats on knocking it out of the park in Elie Saab — and perhaps that engagement to Justin Timberlake.
Everything about Angelina Jolie's look —her Versace gown, classy updo, and bold red lips — was perfect. Here she is with the best accessory, Brad.
Diane Lane, in Reem Acra, is as stunning now as she was in "the Outsiders."
Rooney Mara, still in character, whatever. She killed it in Nina Ricci.
The ladies of "Modern Family" big winners on the red carpet, too. Julie Bowen in Reem Acra and Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang.
Salma Hayek, looked gorgeous in Gucci, and was one of the few ladies with some cleavage on the red carpet. We thank her.
Emma Stone in Lanvin struck the perfect balance of effortless and beautiful in her floaty gown. Trend 1 Plunging necklines

How could you forget he hasn’t stopped talking about it.

Gervais is back, for the third year in a row, as host of the show that will air on Jan. 15, 2012.

According to People.com, the decision was made after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association met with a top official at NBC, which is airing the awards.

“While many welcome Gervais’s return, not everyone is happy with the decision because last year his blunt one-liners targeting big-name celebrities caused anger and resentment in some quarters,” says a blog post on the HFPA’s own web site.

‘Social Network,’ ‘Glee’ live up to expectations http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2011/01/16/social-network-glee-live-up-to-expectations/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2011/01/16/social-network-glee-live-up-to-expectations/#comments Sun, 16 Jan 2011 22:07:55 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2011/01/16/social-network-glee-live-up-to-expectations/
However it was second-time host of the show, Ricky Gervais, that people will be buzzing about today. On the red carpet, Gervais told Ryan Seacrest, “I’ll go close to the edge but not go over it.” But only a few moments into his opening monologue, he was far beyond that point.

Coming onto the stage sipping a pint of beer, one of Gervais’ first cracks drew moans from the crowd: “I Love You, Phillip Morris,” he noted was two straight men playing gay, “probably the opposite of two famous Scientologists.”

The most emotional moment came when a visibly stunned Chris Colfer of “Glee” accepted his award for best supporting actor in a comedy. Colfer thanked the young fans of the show and ended his speech with his own Dustin Lance Black moment: “all of the kids who are told that they can't be who they really are ... Well, screw that, kids!”

A pregnant Natalie Portman received a roar of applause when she accepted the Best Actress award for her role in “Black Swan.” In her speech she thanked partner Benjamin Millepied who co-starred in the film as a man who was not attracted to her. “He’s the best actor, it’s true, he totally wants to sleep with me,” she joked.

“Glee” and “The Social Network” cleaned up, overall. “Glee” collected three awards including best comedy and “The Social Network” picked up four globes including best dramatic picture.

At last night’s 68th annual Golden Globe Awards, there were two clear front-runners when it came to artistic product: “Glee” and “The Social Network.”

However it was second-time host of the show, Ricky Gervais, that people will be buzzing about today. On the red carpet, Gervais told Ryan Seacrest, “I’ll go close to the edge but not go over it.” But only a few moments into his opening monologue, he was far beyond that point.

Will Ricky Gervais be Golden yet again? http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2011/01/13/will-ricky-gervais-be-golden-yet-again/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2011/01/13/will-ricky-gervais-be-golden-yet-again/#comments Thu, 13 Jan 2011 18:47:27 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2011/01/13/will-ricky-gervais-be-golden-yet-again/
“I wasn’t going to do it again but then I thought, I could improve,” Gervais explains, almost anticipating a razzing. “That’s what I really thought.”

“I like the jeopardy,” he continues. “It’s live and there’s, you know, a quarter of a billion people watching and a room full of some of the most powerful people in the world. That’s my extreme sport. That’s what gives me an adrenaline rush — thinking it could be the end of my career.”

He may be predicting a sad fate, but the creator of “The Office” isn’t shy about his own success, noting that he only can truly take pride in projects that are of his own making — not award shows. That’s why he’s saying he won’t host the Globes after this last time ... again.

“I’m not a presenter. I don’t think I should be doing it at all,” he confesses modestly. “But I suppose I want this to be great and go out on a high. If I’m bad, I shouldn’t do it again and if I’m good, I shouldn’t do it again. That’s the thinking, really.”

It might be hard to believe him this time around, but its possible that his own real worry that he’ll screw up is what keeps him hedging his bets.

“There is a constant fight in my head with what will go down well and what won’t,” he says of his sometimes-controversial comedy. “If people know where you’re coming from and what the target really is, you can get away with murder … cue O.J. Simpson joke.”]]>
When comedian Ricky Gervais signed on to host the 2010 Golden Globes, he said he would absolutely only host the show once. But with an 18 percent increase in the ratings that year, 2011 finds him back in the role of Globes host again. What gives?

“I wasn’t going to do it again but then I thought, I could improve,” Gervais explains, almost anticipating a razzing. “That’s what I really thought.”
